Singaporean tourist reportedly found dead in Italy hotel; authorities probe possible carbon monoxide poisoning

A Singaporean man travelling in Italy died in a hotel room on Sept 16, reported local media outlet La Sicilia on Sept 23.

The 66-year-old was reportedly staying in Rifugio Sapienza, on the Mount Etna volcano on Sicily island.

According to La Sicilia, the hotel was closed for several days following the death.

After it reopened, however, several guests allegedly suffered carbon monoxide poisoning between Sunday (Sept 20) night and Monday, local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia reported.

Thirty-two guests and six hotel employees were purportedly affected, with some taken to hospital for treatment.

On Monday, authorities found the presence of carbon monoxide in many areas of the hotel, reported Rai News.

It is suspected that the gas leak might be due to a malfunction of the exhaust system of a boiler powered by liquefied petroleum gas, according to the report.

Carbon monoxide was allegedly detected in rooms located above the kitchen, with the highest concentration in the one occupied by the Singaporean tourist, La Sicilia reported.

An investigation into the two events has been opened by the Catania Prosecutor's Office to determine if the two events are linked.
