The opposition-controlled Legislative Yuan yesterday rejected the 27 candidates nominated by President William Lai （賴清德） for the Control Yuan.
The nominees for Control Yuan president Chen Yung-hsing （陳永興） and vice president Wang Jung-chang （王榮璋） were among those who failed to secure enough support in the roll-call vote.
The legislature began the confirmation vote at 10am, with most nominees receiving 50 votes in favor and 60 against.
Under Article 29 of the Act Governing the Legislative Yuan’s Power （立法院職權行使法）, nominations require approval from more than half of all legislators, or 57 votes, to pass.
Ahead of the vote, Democratic Progressive Party caucus chief executive Chuang Jui-hsiung （莊瑞雄） said the caucus unanimously supported Lai’s nominees for the government watchdog.
Chinese Nationalist party （KMT） caucus deputy secretary-general Hsu Yu-chen （許宇甄） said that the party would not allow any unsuitable candidates to serve as Control Yuan members.
The KMT had raised numerous concerns about the Control Yuan’s performance over the past few years, she said, adding that critics had long accused the government watchdog of applying uneven standards of oversight to different political parties and cases.
The Taiwan People’s Party （TPP） unanimously voted against the nominees, TPP Legislator Hung Yu-hsiang （洪毓祥） said, citing what he described as failures in oversight, protection of the powerful and a lack of exemplary conduct among Control Yuan members.
The Control Yuan’s previous members completed their six-year term on July 31. Under the law, newly appointed members should have assumed office on Aug. 1.
Lai announced his list of candidates in June.
Premier Cho Jung-tai （卓榮泰） urged the ruling and opposition parties to work together to restore constitutional order and uphold their constitutional responsibility by reviewing the budget according to the law and within the statutory time frame.
