With a busy overseas work schedule wrapped up, Singapore's Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung switched gears and channelled his inner travel vlogger.

After several days of meetings at the UN in New York, Ong visited Flushing in Queens and shared his impressions of the neighbourhood in a social media video that has since garnered more than 302,000 views and 14,500 likes.

In a post on Monday (Sept 28), he offered viewers a glimpse into Flushing's history, including its Dutch colonial roots, while sprinkling in a light-hearted reference to Spider-Man and Peter Parker, the fictional New Yorkers.

"The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle down in this part of the US, so New York used to be called New Amsterdam and this part of town is called Vlissingen," said Ong.

"Today, it's called Flushing and is a big Asian town," he added, with the post captioned: "Best place to have Chinese food in New York."

The video plays out like a mini travel vlog, with Ong taking viewers to several spots in the neighbourhood, capturing bustling streets, local businesses and even a view of the sunset.

As Ong recorded himself speaking to the camera, some onlookers could be seen casting curious glances at what he was filming, while in other shots, Ong could be seen deftly sidestepping passers-by to avoid bumping into anyone.

The video also features performances at a local Chinese restaurant, as well as footage of Ong dining there and soaking up the atmosphere.

In the comments section, netizens praised Ong for his efforts to give viewers a look at Queens beyond his official engagements.

"Thanks for showing us Queens outside of work in NY," said one user.

Another added: "Not easy to be a minister in Singapore - have to be content creator despite the official duties (and) kudos to the social media team for training Minister Ong well."

Others were more interested in the food.

"I could have brought you on a food tour," one commenter wrote, while another simply asked, "Where did you eat?"

The visit came as part of Ong's trip to New York after attending the UN General Assembly high-level Meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

"It's been seven years since the Covid-19 outbreak, and the world continues to prepare for the next," Ong said in a separate post.

On the sidelines, Ong attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) global alliance for women's health board meeting as a new co-chair of the board.

During the trip, Ong also met with his counterparts from Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, and caught up with several Singaporeans living and working in New York.
