UN Command says Armistice Agreement violation occurred over DMZ mine blast

The United Nations Command said Wednesday that last week’s mine blast inside the Demilitarized Zone was an Armistice Agreement violation. A joint investigation with the South Korean military found an active North Korean mine on the South Korean side of the Military Demarcation Line. South Korea’s military had earlier said the Sept. 21 blast was highly likely caused by North Korean resin antipersonnel mines and injured three soldiers. North Korea denied involvement and warned of retaliation.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday that North Korean resin antipersonnel mines were highly likely to have caused the Sept. 21 blast.

The blast injured three South Korean soldiers, and two of them suffered critical injuries.

The UNC said it is addressing the violation through established Armistice mechanisms.

North Korea’s Kim Yo-jong accused Seoul of fabricating the findings and warned of merciless retaliation if the South takes corresponding actions.

The United Nations Command (UNC) said Wednesday it found a violation of the Armistice Agreement has occurred over last week's mine blast inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

"Based on the findings of the investigation, UNC determined that an Armistice Agreement violation occurred. UNC is addressing the violation through established Armistice mechanisms," it said in an emailed statement.

The UNC said a joint investigation team with the South Korean military identified an active North Korean mine on the South Korean side of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL).

"UNC remains committed to maintaining and enforcing the Armistice Agreement and fulfilling its responsibilities to preserve stability and prevent escalation on the Korean Peninsula," it said.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff released Monday its preliminary findings on the joint investigation with the UNC on the Sept. 21 mine blast. It determined that North Korean resin antipersonnel mines "highly likely" caused the two explosions that injured three South Korean soldiers. Two of them suffered critical injuries.

North Korea denied its involvement in a statement issued Wednesday by Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of its leader Kim Jong-un, accusing Seoul of fabricating the findings and warning of "merciless" retaliation if the South takes any corresponding actions.

联合国表示，与韩国军方联合调查组在军事分界线（MDL）韩国一侧发现了一处朝鲜地雷。

“联合国大会仍致力于维护和执行停战协定，并履行其维护朝鲜半岛稳定和防止局势升级的责任，”声明中写道。

韩国联合参谋本部周一公布了与联合国就9月21日地雷爆炸事件进行的联合调查的初步结果。调查认定，朝鲜制造的树脂杀伤人员地雷“极有可能”引发了两次爆炸，造成三名韩国士兵受伤，其中两人伤势严重。
