Singapore, Germany agree to expand defence ties during Chan Chun Sing's Berlin visit

The defence ministers of Singapore and Germany have agreed to deepen defence cooperation in areas of mutual interest, the city state's Ministry of Defence said on Thursday (Oct 1).

Chan Chun Sing, who is also Singapore's Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Minister-in-charge of the Public Service, and German Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius reaffirmed the two countries' strong and substantive bilateral defence relations and exchanged views on recent geopolitical developments.

In a news release on Thursday evening, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said the two ministers agreed to expand cooperation in areas including cybersecurity, countering hybrid threats, the defence industry, supply chain resilience and upholding international law.

The Singaporean defence minister also welcomed Germany's interest in joining the Guiding Principles for Underwater Infrastructure Defence Exchanges (GUIDE).

Launched at the Shangri-La Dialogue in May 2026, GUIDE brings together countries with shared interests in safeguarding critical underwater infrastructure.

On the second day of his four-day visit, Chan also inspected a Guard of Honour at the Federal Ministry of Defence in Berlin and laid a wreath at the Bundeswehr Memorial.

He will also officiate at the launch of the Republic of Singapore Navy's first offshore patrol vessel in Berne on Thursday night (Singapore time).

On Friday, Chan is scheduled to visit the Oberlausitz Military Training Area to witness Exercise Panzer Strike, conducted by the Singapore army.

MINDEF said that Chan's visit to Germany underscores the strong and substantive defence ties between Singapore and Germany.

"Both countries cooperate and interact frequently through high-level visits and dialogues, military-to-military exchanges, as well as cross-attendance of professional courses and defence technology collaboration."

The ministry added that these interactions have strengthened ties between the two defence establishments, which are underpinned by an enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement signed in 2018.
