Singapore, Malaysia explore third-country investment in JS-SEZ

Malaysia and Singapore are working together to attract third-country investors to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, aiming to boost it as a regional investment hub.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong emphasised the importance of future collaboration beyond Johor and Singapore, with details to be announced later.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani highlighted Singaporean investment of over S$5.5 billion in JS-SEZ, creating numerous high-value jobs.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 — Malaysia and Singapore are exploring ways to attract third-country investors to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), further strengthening the zone as a regional investment and export hub.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said the cooperation would extend beyond Johor and Singapore to include efforts to attract investors from other countries and facilitate exports to other markets.

“This is a very important bilateral cooperation between our two countries, as well as between Johor and Singapore. Indeed, we are looking for additional ways to enhance Johor-Singapore cooperation.

“Hopefully, more details will be announced in time to come on how we can further support one another in the years ahead,” he said in his keynote speech during a business luncheon with the Malaysia-Singapore Business Council on his one-day working visit here.

Gan, who is also the Minister for Trade and Industry, said Singapore, which will assume the Asean Chairmanship next year, hopes to execute a series of projects following the implementation of the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA).

He said the agreement would pave the way for greater digital cooperation among Asean member states.

“At the last Asean meeting in Manila, we also concluded with the cross-examination of the digital economy agreement.

“This is something that I know all businesses are asking about, and we are eager to have this finally signed this year and come into effect by next year,” he said.

Meanwhile, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani noted that Singaporean firms have pledged more than S$5.5 billion (RM17.6 billion) to JS-SEZ, generating thousands of high-value jobs.

He said the investments include advanced manufacturing, data centres, energy technology and solar energy, adding that the JS-SEZ has progressed from a strategic concept into an active private economy hub. — Bernama

兼任贸易及工业部长的颜金勇表示，新加坡将于明年担任东盟轮值主席国，希望在东盟数字经济框架协议（DEFA）实施后，开展一系列项目。

他表示，该协议将为东盟成员国之间加强数字合作铺平道路。

“在马尼拉举行的上一次东盟会议上，我们也对数字经济协议进行了交叉审查。

“我知道所有企业都在询问此事，我们也渴望今年能最终签署这项协议，并在明年生效，”他说。

与此同时，投资、贸易和工业部长拿督斯里佐哈里·阿卜杜勒·加尼指出，新加坡企业已承诺向JS-SEZ投资超过55亿新元（176亿令吉），创造了数千个高价值就业岗位。

他表示，这些投资涵盖先进制造业、数据中心、能源技术和太阳能等领域，并补充说，JS-SEZ已从一个战略构想发展成为一个活跃的私营经济中心。——马新社
