As of June, Malaysia recorded 130,307 drug addicts, with Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, and Perlis showing worrying drug use trends above the national ratio.

The 15-to-39 age group is most affected, predominantly holding secondary education or lower, with high unemployment and self-employment among drug users.

Amphetamine-type stimulants lead substance abuse, prompting calls for data-driven anti-drug policies and efforts, supported by strong political will and cooperation nationwide.

BENTONG, Oct 5 — A total of 130,307 drug addicts were recorded in the country as of June, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He saId Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, and Perlis recorded worrying trends in drug use and abuse, exceeding the national ratio of 381 cases per 100,000 population.

“For every 100,000 people, Terengganu recorded 735 individuals, while Kelantan recorded 694, Kedah 669, and Perlis 646. Thus, all of them surpassed the national ratio,” he said during a press conference held in conjunction with the handover of the completed project to build, demolish, and upgrade the Karak Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (PUSPEN) here today.

Meanwhile, he noted that based on the profiles of the addicts, the 15-to-39 age group constituted the largest segment involved, while in terms of education, the majority held the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) qualification or lower.

“When looking at employment status, the highest number were unemployed, followed by the self-employed and those working in the private sector. These three employment categories account for a significant percentage of those involved,” he said.

Saifuddin Nasution said amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) or synthetic drugs are the most widely used substances among addicts, accounting for 84 per cent of drug use.

“These figures are not merely data; they send a distinct signal. That is why I have urged the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) to ensure that planned programmes are data-driven and that policies are formulated based on data,” he said.

He added that the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) is open to intensifying campaigns and collaborative efforts including with state governments to address this issue.

Furthermore, he noted that tackling the drug problem requires strong political will and cooperation from all parties, as the issue is no longer merely an individual problem but has become a national one.

“Firstly, in terms of politics, there must be strong political will to overcome or combat this scourge. Secondly, we must first agree that the drug problem is no longer just an individual issue; it has become a national problem,” he said.

Also present were Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Bentong Member of Parliament Young Syefura Othman, and AADK director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh. — Bernama
