A Phuket food delivery rider is accused of using routine deliveries to scout two foreign residents’ homes before stealing more than ฿3.69 million. Police say Thanawut Chairit, 23, returned after learning the properties’ layouts and security weaknesses, taking $100,000 and expensive camera equipment. Yet the money quickly left a trail through Patong currency exchanges, gold purchases and football gambling. Within two days, investigators tracked him returning from Trang and arrested him at Phuket’s northern gateway. A search of his MG5 uncovered $30,700, Thai cash, gold and other property, while police hunt for the remaining money.

A Phuket food delivery rider is accused of turning routine customer visits into reconnaissance for two lucrative burglaries. Police say 23-year-old Thanawut Chairit had previously delivered food to both foreign residents’ homes in Chalong. Later, he allegedly returned and stole more than ฿3.69 million in cash and valuables. The haul included about US$100,000 from one property and expensive camera equipment from another.

However, police say the suspected spending spree quickly left a trail. Some stolen dollars were allegedly exchanged in Patong. Investigators say other proceeds bought gold, covered personal spending and funded football gambling. Within two days, officers were waiting as Thanawut drove back onto Phuket from his home province of Trang.

Police arrested him at the Tha Chat Chai checkpoint at about 5.15 pm on October 2. Officers stopped his MG5 as it entered Phuket through the island’s northern gateway. Inside, they found US$30,700, ฿75,150, gold, a camera and a drone. Other property was also recovered.

Delivery rider’s visits to foreign homes become central to police case over ฿3.69 million burglaries

Notably, the arrest followed two burglary complaints made in Chalong on September 30. Both victims were foreign residents. Phuket Provincial Police commander Pol Maj Gen Dr Surachai Suksai announced the arrest on October 3. Chalong Police and Phuket City police were involved in the investigation.

Thanawut, 23, comes from Trang in southern Thailand. Some Thai reports initially identified him only as Mr A. He worked as a food delivery rider in Phuket. Separately, he played amateur football and travelled to participate in matches.

Yet his delivery work became a key element of the police case. Investigators say Thanawut had previously taken food orders to both properties. Those visits gave him legitimate access to the homes before anything was reported stolen.

According to police, the deliveries also provided opportunities to observe the properties. Investigators believe he became familiar with their layouts and entrances. In addition, police say he identified weaknesses in security around the homes. He allegedly returned when occupants were absent or the properties were insufficiently secured.

Camera gear and US$100,000 vanish as police trace stolen dollars, gold purchases and gambling in Phuket

The first burglary produced a haul of valuable photographic equipment. A foreign resident reported 12 camera-related items missing. Police valued them at ฿387,788. Investigators later recovered every one of those 12 items.

The second theft was far bigger. Another foreign resident reported approximately US$100,000 missing from a home. At the time, that represented several million baht. Combined with the camera equipment, police put total losses above ฿3.69 million.

Immediately afterwards, investigators began following the money and missing property. Police say some stolen US currency was taken to Patong. There, part of the dollar haul was allegedly exchanged for Thai baht.

Meanwhile, investigators say some proceeds were turned into gold. Other money allegedly disappeared through personal spending. Police also say Thanawut spent part of the missing cash gambling on football.

By October 1, the investigation had moved directly towards the suspect. Chalong and Phuket City police searched his accommodation. Officers recovered several items during the operation. They also seized a motorcycle allegedly used during the burglaries.

As part of this, investigators assembled evidence for a court application. Phuket Provincial Court subsequently issued an arrest warrant. However, police discovered their suspect was no longer on the island.

Thanawut had driven an MG5 away from Phuket, according to investigators. He then travelled south to Trang, his home province. Police continued following his movements rather than waiting for him to reappear.

Then came the break investigators needed. On October 2, police learned Thanawut was heading back towards Phuket. Officers quickly coordinated an interception at the island’s northern road entrance.

In response, police prepared at the Tha Chat Chai checkpoint in Mai Khao, Thalang district. The checkpoint controls the principal road route onto Phuket from Phang-nga. Any vehicle returning by road would have to enter the island through that northern corridor.

At approximately 5.15 pm, Thanawut’s MG5 reached the checkpoint. Officers stopped the vehicle and arrested him under the court warrant. Police then searched the car.

What they found gave investigators another major recovery. Officers seized US$30,700 in cash. They also recovered ฿75,150 in Thai currency.

Alongside the cash, police found substantial gold holdings. The haul included three baht-weight of gold and another one salung. A camera and drone were also among the property seized.

On another front, police continued searching for assets after the checkpoint arrest. Investigators subsequently recovered another approximately ฿250,000 worth of property. The growing haul allowed officers to account for more of both victims’ losses.

In the first case, police say the recovery is complete. All 12 stolen camera-related items have been recovered. Those goods had a reported combined value of ฿387,788.

In contrast, a significant portion of the second victim’s reported loss remains outstanding. Police say more than ฿1.32 million has been recovered from that case. The original report concerned approximately US$100,000 in missing cash.

During questioning, Thanawut reportedly told investigators that much of the remaining money had already disappeared. Police say he claimed some was spent on personal expenses. Furthermore, he reportedly admitted spending part of it on football gambling.

Gold, camera and drone recovered as police trace more assets while large cash loss remains outstanding

Investigators are continuing to examine property connected with the case. At the same time, they are tracing financial movements following the two burglaries. The exchange of US dollars in Patong forms part of that trail.

Gold purchases are another part of the investigation. So are the recovered Thai currency and other seized assets. Police are attempting to account for the remaining money reported missing.

Still, the most striking element is how police say the two homes came onto the suspect’s radar. These were not addresses completely unknown to him. Investigators say Thanawut had previously visited both while carrying out food deliveries.

In effect, his work gave him an ordinary reason to approach the properties. Police say those visits allowed him to observe access points and layouts. Investigators also believe he noticed weaknesses in the security arrangements.

Afterwards, he allegedly returned without a food order. Police say he targeted the properties when residents were absent or security was insufficient. Cash and valuables were then taken from the two homes.

Police say earlier food deliveries gave suspect access to study homes before returning for valuables

Importantly, available police reports connect Thanawut with two properties only. No confirmed police account links him to a broader Phuket burglary spree. The current case therefore remains focused on the two Chalong complaints from September 30.

Likewise, the nationalities of the foreign victims have not been disclosed in the available reports. Police have identified them only as foreign residents. No further personal details about either victim have been released in the supplied material.

Nevertheless, the two complaints triggered a fast-moving investigation across several locations. It began in Chalong with reports of missing cameras and US currency. Investigators then followed financial activity involving the stolen dollars to Patong.

From there, officers searched Thanawut’s accommodation on October 1. They seized property and a motorcycle allegedly connected with the offences. Police then secured the Phuket Provincial Court warrant.

By that stage, however, investigators say Thanawut had driven to Trang. His movements then shifted the operation away from Phuket. Yet the trip also created a clear interception point when he headed back.

Police limit case to two Chalong homes as stolen money trail leads from Phuket to Patong and Trang

Once police learned he was returning, officers moved to Tha Chat Chai. The checkpoint provided a natural choke point at Phuket’s northern entrance. Consequently, investigators were waiting before the MG5 could travel farther onto the island.

The arrest then delivered another cache of suspected proceeds. US dollars, Thai baht and gold were recovered from the vehicle. A camera, drone and additional property added to the haul.

Subsequent recoveries pushed the value higher. Police later traced another roughly ฿250,000 in property. Meanwhile, every item from the first burglary was accounted for.

The second case remains financially larger. Police have recovered more than ฿1.32 million linked to that burglary. However, investigators are still tracing the remainder of the approximately US$100,000 reported missing.

Following the arrest, Chalong Police also issued a direct warning to residents and tourists. Officers urged people using food delivery services to secure their properties. They specifically advised locking doors, windows and gates.

Additionally, police warned against keeping large amounts of cash or valuables readily accessible inside homes. The advice followed the circumstances investigators say they uncovered during the case.

Checkpoint arrest yields cash, gold and property as police warn delivery customers to secure homes

The suspect had a legitimate reason to visit both addresses before the burglaries, police say. He arrived as a food delivery rider. Later, investigators allege, knowledge gained during those visits was used to target the properties.

For investigators, several strands now form the case. They include the previous deliveries, stolen property and movements of the missing US currency. Police also have the motorcycle, recovered cash, gold and property seized from the MG5.

Beyond that, officers are examining the suspect’s reported spending after the burglaries. Police say proceeds went towards gold and personal expenses. They also cite football gambling during their account of the missing money.

Legal proceedings against Thanawut are continuing over the two Chalong burglaries. In parallel, police are tracing outstanding money and examining additional property. Their investigation remains centred on the two September 30 theft reports.

Previous food deliveries, recovered cash and alleged spending now form core of police burglary case

So far, the first victim’s stolen property has been fully recovered, according to police. More than ฿1.32 million has also been recovered from the second case. Still, a sizeable portion of the reported US$100,000 remains unaccounted for.

The police operation moved rapidly from two burglary complaints to an arrest at Phuket’s northern gateway. Investigators followed property, currency movements and the suspect’s journey to Trang. Then they waited for his return.

Two days after the theft reports, the MG5 drove into their checkpoint. Police arrested Thanawut and searched the vehicle. Cash, gold and valuables were recovered.

But investigators say the story started before either burglary was reported. Thanawut already knew both addresses through his work. He had previously visited the two foreign residents’ homes to deliver their food.
