Workplaces in Serian may operate during haze emergency with health precautions, says SDMC

Workplaces in Serian affected by the haze may continue operations but must take health precautions.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee is closely monitoring air quality in anticipation of hazardous levels.

An emergency was declared in Serian as the Air Pollutant Index exceeded 500, with health advice issued to the public.

KUCHING, Sept 5 — Government, private offices and other workplaces affected by the haze emergency in Serian, including industries, plantations, construction sites and quarries may continue their operations but must take health precautionary measures.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also state Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said the committee is closely monitoring the haze situation across Sarawak, particularly the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in Serian.

“SDMC is currently monitoring the API level in Serian within these three days in anticipation for any fluctuation of the API level, should it increase to a level above 500.

“This monitoring is to be done before any recommendation to be proposed to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the status of emergency in Serian,” he said in a statement today.

He said the API is primarily affected by wind direction and the source of hotspots.

According to SDMC, the Serian air quality monitoring station recorded an API reading of 334 as at 10 am, which was in the hazardous category.

Uggah advised the public to avoid outdoor activities, wear an N95 or three-ply mask if outdoor exposure is unavoidable, and take particular care of children, senior citizens and those who are more vulnerable to the effects of haze.

“SDMC will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide further updates as necessary. We will continue to work closely with all relevant state and federal agencies,” he said.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has consented to the declaration of an emergency in Serian Division after the API reading exceeded 500.

The decision was made after taking into account the advice of the Prime Minister and Premier of Sarawak alongside related agencies, regarding air quality in the affected area, said the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement on Friday (September 4). — Bernama

砂拉越副州长兼州灾害管理委员会（SDMC）主席拿督阿玛道格拉斯·乌加·恩巴斯表示，该委员会正在密切监测砂拉越各地的雾霾情况，特别是西连的空气污染指数（API）读数。

“SDMC目前正在监测Serian地区的API水平，预计这三天内API水平将出现任何波动，如果API水平上升到500以上。

“在就西连的紧急状态向砂拉越州州长丹斯里阿邦佐哈里和首相拿督斯里安华提出任何建议之前，必须先进行这项监测，”他今天在一份声明中说。

他表示，API主要受风向和热点来源的影响。

据 SDMC 称，西连空气质量监测站上午 10 点记录的 API 读数为 334，属于危险级别。

乌加建议公众避免户外活动，如果不可避免地要外出，则佩戴 N95 或三层口罩，并特别照顾儿童、老年人和那些更容易受到雾霾影响的人。

“SDMC将继续密切关注事态发展，并根据需要提供进一步的最新消息。我们将继续与所有相关的州和联邦机构密切合作，”他说道。
