柔佛州务大臣:学生死亡事件后,州政府准备协助学校审查安保措施

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi stated the state government will review school infrastructure to enhance security after a student's death in Yong Peng.

There is support for Education Ministry initiatives like CCTV installations, and all safety measures are being considered to prevent future incidents.

A boy was detained by police in connection with the death, and discussions are underway to reassess school safety procedures.

BATU PAHAT, Oct 5 — The Johor state government is ready to review and assist with basic infrastructure needs in schools across the state to strengthen security measures, says Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

He said this is to prevent a recurrence of the incident that led to the death of 16-year-old Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal at a secondary school in Yong Peng, near here.

Onn Hafiz expressed full support for any initiative implemented by the Education Ministry (MOE), particularly the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in strategic areas within school premises.

"We have received a report on the incident and will look into every angle and opportunity to ensure student safety is better guaranteed," he said, adding that he would liaise with the ministry regarding student safety issues.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the victim's family in Kampung Parit Selamat today, he expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the state government, while urging the public to give police space to conduct a thorough investigation and refrain from speculation.

Meanwhile, State Education and Information Committee chairman Dr Muhammad Naqib Md Ghazali said discussions would be held soon between the Johor State Education Department (JPNJ) and the Batu Pahat District Education Office (PPD).

He said the meeting would re-examine safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) in detail to address any existing weaknesses or shortcomings.

"This is not a matter to be taken lightly as it involves the loss of a life," he said.

On Saturday (Oct 3), Irene Sofiya was found unconscious and bleeding in the school hall at about 5.50 pm.

Johor Police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the victim sustained injuries to her head and body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police subsequently detained a 16-year-old boy in Yong Peng at about 7 pm the same day. He was later remanded in custody for six days until Oct 9 to assist in investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. — Bernama
