Malaysia equalled its best-ever gold medal haul at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, winning nine golds in various sports including squash, track cycling, karate, and e-sports.
Squash significantly contributed to the gold tally, with key players already having qualified for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028, showcasing the nation's strength.
Despite the successes, some sports didn't meet expectations, indicating the need for continued development and strategic planning to maintain and improve international competitiveness.
NAGOYA, Oct 5 — The nine gold medals secured by the Malaysian contingent at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games matched the nation’s best-ever performance from Guangzhou 2010, more importantly, however, this achievement offers an opportunity to assess how the country’s sporting potential can be translated into even greater success in the future.
These successes came from karate, e-sports, sepak takraw, squash, and track cycling, enabling Malaysia to surpass the initial target of six gold medals set prior to the games.
Squash emerged as a key contributor with Ng Eain Yow and S. Sivasangari having already qualified for the Los Angeles Olympics (LA28) and defended their respective singles titles, while the men’s and women’s squads also dominated the team events.
The four gold medals from the sport cemented squash’s status as a primary medal prospect for the nation, while also reflecting the results of continuous athlete development efforts.
In sepak takraw, the men’s team regu gold held special significance, as Malaysia ended a 36-year wait to stand atop the podium in that event.
Track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang leveraged his vast experience to win the men’s keirin, thereby ending Malaysia’s 16-year drought in the event.
Meanwhile, Taj Izrin Aiman Taj Madira made history as the country’s first e-sports representative to win an Asian Games gold medal triumphing in Gran Turismo 7 while Adeola Fay Robert and C. Shahmalarani contributed two gold medals in karate.
Collectively, these results demonstrate that Malaysia’s sporting strength is broadening and the nation is no longer solely reliant on traditional sports but is showcasing potential in new disciplines and involving athletes from different generations.
However, those nine gold medals should not overshadow certain issues that arose during the 16 days of competition in Aichi-Nagoya.
Several sports expected to contribute medals failed to meet their targets, while the men’s hockey squad missed the chance to secure gold and an automatic ticket to LA28 after losing to India in the final.
This situation demonstrates that a contingent’s strength cannot be measured solely by medal count, rather, it depends on the ability of each sport to capitalise on opportunities when facing top-level competition.
Therefore, the achievements in Aichi-Nagoya should serve as a basis for re-evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each sport, including aspects such as talent development, coaching, competition preparation, and sports science and medical support.
National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Jefri Ngadirin described the achievement as a positive indicator that the country’s high-performance sports development programme is on the right track, though he cautioned that this success is not the final destination.
In addition to the nine gold medals, the national contingent brought home seven silver and 16 bronze medals, demonstrating that Malaysia retains a solid foundation to remain competitive at the Asian level.
However, an even greater challenge lies ahead as Malaysia prepares to host the 2027 SEA Games, before attention shifts to LA28, the nation’s primary target in the quest to realise the dream of winning its first Olympic gold medal.
Aichi-Nagoya ultimately saw Malaysia secure nine gold medals, matching the best record set at Guangzhou 2010.
However, the true value of this achievement should not be measured solely by that figure.
Instead, these nine gold medals should serve as a starting point to identify what worked well, address remaining weaknesses, and build continuity, ensuring that the success in Aichi-Nagoya does not merely repeat history, but acts as a springboard for even greater achievements on the international stage. — Bernama
