‘Round‑the‑clock service’: Puspakom plans 24‑hour operations for vehicle inspections

The Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) plans to extend its operating hours to 24 hours daily starting January, contingent on public response to a preliminary seven-day operational week beginning in November and sufficient manpower.

Puspakom CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman noted ongoing consultations with unions for better working conditions.

Additionally, Puspakom is introducing initiatives such as the Puspakom Towering Malaysian Awards and expanding on-site inspection services to enhance customer convenience and operational efficiency.

KLANG, Sept 5 — The Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) plans to extend its operating hours to 24 hours a day starting next January to provide greater convenience to the public for vehicle inspections.

Puspakom Chief Executive Officer Mahmood Razak Bahman said the implementation would depend on public response to the extension of operating hours to seven days a week from November, as well as the availability of sufficient manpower.

“We have engaged with the National Union of Commercial Workers (NUCW) and the Puspakom Staff Union to gauge their views on a concept that provides more reasonable working hours, specifically eight to 10 hours a day compared with the current 12 hours, as well as two rest days a week instead of one.

“As for 24-hour operations, the target is to launch them next January, subject to public response to the seven-day operation, workforce readiness and operational capacity,” he told Bernama after launching the GiCheck Auto Weekend 2026 event at the Aeon Bukit Tinggi premises here today.

Also present were Ministry of Transport Land Division secretary Datuk Mohamed Irwan Mansor and Puspakom Chief Operating Officer Dr Ahmad Zahiri Ismail.

Meanwhile, Mahmood said Puspakom was introducing several other innovations, including a new “community hero” recognition award and an expansion of on-site inspection services for customers.

He said the initiatives included the introduction of the Puspakom Towering Malaysian Awards and enhanced on-site inspection services to make the inspection process more convenient for vehicle owners.

“The new award programme is created specifically to honour individuals who bring about positive change to society or the environment, even though their contributions often go unnoticed by the general public.

“This recognition initiative is currently being developed in collaboration with strategic partners and selected media agencies, with further details to be announced soon,” he said.

Elaborating, he said the modernisation initiative was supported by various interactive activities, including GiCheck Auto Weekend 2026, aimed at delivering road safety messages to the public through hands-on and practical engagement.

He said the measures were expected to improve Puspakom’s overall operational efficiency while strengthening ties between the vehicle inspection agency and the local community.

The inaugural GiCheck Auto Weekend 2026 featured various technical demonstrations, including a “Driving Under the Influence” (DUI) simulation, a “seat belt convincer” test and an exhibition of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology.

Held in conjunction with the National Month celebrations, the event carried the theme “Driving Safer Roads Together”.

“Through GiCheck Auto Weekend, we aim to make road safety education more accessible, engaging and relevant to Malaysians, while raising public awareness of the vital role vehicle inspections play in keeping our roads safe,” he said. — Bernama
