Apong Guan, a renowned food truck serving fluffy, santan-scented apom pancakes for over 50 years in Penang, has relocated to Kuala Lumpur under the management of Alan Uan, son of the original founder Uan Cheng Guan.

The truck, now situated in Pandan Indah, offers three versions of apom—Original, Peanut Butter, and Pandan Flavour—using a modern electric griddle for consistent quality.

Despite a quieter reception, the truck offers takeaway orders and delivery through platforms like FoodPanda.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — Back in June this year, Apong Guan announced they would relocate to Kuala Lumpur.

Well, their food truck is now open daily, parked in front of Hong Leong Bank Berhad in Pandan Indah.

For more than 50 years, Uan Cheng Guan served Penangites their favourite fluffy santan -scented pancakes topped with bananas and corn from his truck parked along Jalan Burma.

As you queued and patiently waited for the pancakes to be cooked, he would entertain everyone with his storytelling.

The 79-year-old has now hung up his apron, passing the business to his son Alan Uan.

Alan once worked in Kuala Lumpur, which influenced his decision to relocate to the city to seek a bigger market for their family apom that few other places offer.

Alan set up his truck differently: he uses a modern electric griddle instead of the gas fire-griddle his father used, which was required for licensing.

He also supplies the batter to other operators back in Penang.

Since few people know about their presence in Pandan Indah, it is currently quite quiet.

He prepares the pancakes in batches for customers to take away upon ordering because the electric griddle takes time to heat to an optimal temperature for cooking.

He explained that once the electric griddle reaches the right temperature, it produces apom of a more consistent quality.

Three versions are available: Apom Pancake Original with sliced bananas and sweet corn (RM8 for 5 pieces), Apom Pancake Peanut Butter (RM9 for 5 pieces), and Apom Pancake Pandan Flavour (RM9 for 5 pieces).

The apom is indeed fluffy with a delicate, spongy crumb, grated coconut and the sweet scent of freshly squeezed coconut milk.

When eaten hot off the griddle, the apom is especially fluffy. Once it cools down, the coconut fragrance is stronger and they are easier to eat without burning your fingers.

Peanut butter is a new flavour, offering the rich flavour of the smooth peanut butter and coarsely chopped nuts, paired with the apom and ripe banana.

Pandan-flavoured apom comes in a light green hue because Alan uses fresh pandan juice, and it pairs perfectly with the coconut flavour, grated coconut and banana.

For those unable to visit the food truck, the apom can be ordered on FoodPanda, Grab Food and ShopeeFood.
