The government and Grab will fund a RM160 million package to improve earnings and welfare for e-hailing and p-hailing workers under Budget 2027.

Median net income for e-hailing drivers will rise to RM227 a month and RM100 for p-hailing riders, with vehicle maintenance, insurance, and Socso contributions included.

The government will offer matching Socso and EPF incentives to gig workers, with over RM270 million allocated to help them start businesses or buy homes.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — The government and e-hailing platform Grab will jointly fund a RM160 million financial package under Budget 2027 to increase the net earnings of e-hailing and p-hailing workers and improve their welfare.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the announcement today while tabling Budget 2027 at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Anwar said the RM160 million package will cover the increase of minimum income for e-hailing and p-hailing drivers, maintenance and insurance of their vehicles and Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributions.

“This would mean that the net income for e-hailing drivers would rise to a median of RM227 a month and to a median of RM100 a month for p-hailing riders,” Anwar said.

He said the Gig Workers’ Consultative Council will also be finalising the minimum wage rate, income formula and a standard minimum social protection for all gig workers by early 2027.

Socso and EPF benefits

Additionally, Anwar said the government will also offer 35 per cent matching of Socso incentives for e-hailing and p-hailing workers, which would be increased to 50 per cent if their respective platforms also pitch in.

The government, he said, will also offer matching Socso incentives up to 70 per cent for another 200 self-employed people working in 17 non-mandatory sectors.

Anwar said the government will also provide an Employees Provident Fund (EPF) matching contribution incentives up to RM600 a year of RM6,000 for life to encourage retirement savings among the e-hailing and p-hailing drivers.

Anwar also announced additional tax relief up to RM150 for voluntary Socso contributions under Skim Lindung 24 Jam dan Lindung Kendiri.

“BSN and Agrobank will also allocate RM270 million ringgit to extend funding for gig workers who want to start businesses or buy their first home,” he added.
