Motorcyclist and pillion riders travelling via Woodlands Checkpoint will be able to use facial recognition immigration clearance at selected car lanes from Oct 15.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) announced this in a social media post on Friday (Oct 9).

This will enable more motorcyclists to be cleared efficiently, especially during peak periods, and allow for more lanes to operate without the need of an ICA officer.

Based on the trials, motorcyclists can also expect clearance times at these lanes to be about 10 per cent, or around two seconds, shorter than at manual lanes.

The selected lanes will use facial recognition to automatically clear travellers, making the clearance process seamless, contactless and more secure, the authority said.

It is available to all Singaporean residents, long-term pass holders and foreign visitors who have previously entered Singapore.

The use of facial recognition as the primary biometric identifier for immigration clearance was first announced by ICA on March 26.

First-time foreign visitors and those re-entering Singapore with a different passport from their previous trip will first have to undergo manual immigration clearance before they are able to use QR code and facial recognition for subsequent trips.

ICA announced on Sept 18 that facial recognition for immigration clearance has been made operational at all 80 automated arrival and departure lanes at Tuas Checkpoint.
