MCMC has added 1,010 Wi-Fi access points at Universiti Malaysia Sabah to improve campus internet coverage.

This initiative is part of a nationwide project funded by MCMC to enhance internet services in public universities.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching hopes that the National Digital Network Plan will improve 4G coverage in rural Sabah areas.

KOTA KINABALU, Oct 11 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has added approximately 1,010 Wi-Fi access points at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to expand internet coverage on the campus.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said that this initiative is part of MCMC’s ongoing efforts to ensure that the people of Sabah, particularly students and higher education institution (IPT) communities, have access to high-quality internet services.

She added that the initiative is implemented through a project involving the addition of Wi-Fi access points in public universities nationwide, with MCMC utilising its own funds to support the implementation.

“In Malaysia, we have 20 public universities, and MCMC is once again using its own funds to add Wi-Fi access points in universities, and UMS is certainly among the universities involved in this project,” she said during a live interview session with SABAHfm at the Ministry of Communications Integrated Complex here today.

Also present were Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Sabah Broadcasting Department Director Mohd Yusni Mohamed Ali.

Teo said the addition will make internet coverage on the campus more comprehensive, thereby enhancing internet access convenience for the university community.

In the meantime, Teo expressed hope that the implementation of the second phase of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) will further improve 4G coverage in rural and sparsely populated areas in Sabah.

She stated that although these areas lack commercial value for telecommunications companies, the ministry will utilise the latest technologies, such as satellites, to resolve connectivity issues.

In conjunction with her visit to the complex, Teo also inspected the development and operations of departments and facilities under the Ministry of Communications, including the SABAHfm Contrabass Studio, the Entertainment and Music Studio, and the television set for the programme “Kami Bah Ini”. — Bernama
