An attempt to smuggle duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore by car was thwarted after officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) sliced open the vehicle's tyres during checks.

The discovery was made at Woodlands Checkpoint on Sept 26, said ICA in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Oct 13).

ICA's search and examination officers directed the Malaysia-registered car for enhanced checks and discovered over 980 packets of contraband hidden within tyres.

The Malaysian driver, 31, was arrested. The suspect and the seized exhibits have been referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.

It is an offence to buy, sell, convey, possess or deal with duty-unpaid goods under the Customs Act and the Goods and Services Tax Act.

Offenders face a fine of up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded, jail time of up to six years, or both.

Vehicles used to commit such offences, as well as proceeds from the sale of duty-unpaid goods, may be forfeited.
