A Singapore man travelling in Shanxi, China, went on a wild goose chase trying to locate his accommodation booked through a travel platform.

When he finally succeeded, he was supposedly told the lodging does not accept foreigners.

The tourist, surnamed Wu, complained to Shin Min Daily News that he made a $30 booking for the place in Taiyuan city from Sept 28 to Oct 2 on Agoda.

The 54-year-old, who works as a security guard, claimed the booking platform did not provide the hotel's contact number or full address.

He could only search for its location using its name, Ruiping Hotel.

"After arriving at 8am, I followed the map and went one big round, only to reach another hotel," he said.

Exhausted after the long search, he tried to check in to that hotel but was told they could only host Chinese nationals.

He then found a nearby accommodation for $58.

Wu resumed his search for his original lodging the next morning and finally located it using another navigation map.

But he was shocked to hear he could not stay there too.

"The receptionist told me their signage did not have English and that they could only accept Chinese nationals."

Wu said Agoda's listing did not indicate that foreign guests were not allowed to stay at the property. He later received a refund for the booking.

The travel platform told Shin Min Daily News it regrets the matter and is unable to disclose specific case details for privacy reasons.

Agoda said it has contacted the customer to provide further assistance.

It added that it works closely with accommodation partners to ensure information is clear, accurate, and helpful to travellers. It will follow up with providers to take appropriate measures in necessary situations.
