SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Yonhap) -- A new dedicated body will be launched this week to push for sweeping reforms of the police, the police said Sunday, amid growing calls for such a move following a legal revision that will transfer prosecutors' investigative authority to the police.

Calls for police reform have also grown following controversy over a missing person case on the southern island of Jeju in which a police officer was found to have prematurely closed multiple missing person cases without confirming the safety of those reported missing.

"This is to keep our promise to fundamentally reform the police," the agency said in a press notice, adding that details will be announced later.

The notice came after Kim Jong-chul, the new acting head of the Korean National Police Agency, was briefed by senior officials on key pending issues over the weekend.

"It is important that police officers in the field are well aware of the revised investigation procedures," Kim said.

He also instructed officials to ensure that all police officers receive sufficient training this month to familiarize themselves with the revised Criminal Procedure Act, which will strip the prosecution of its investigative authority.

President Lee Jae Myung has stressed the need for police reform, saying the police will soon wield more power than any other government agency.

首尔，9月6日（韩联社）——警方周日表示，本周将成立一个新的专门机构，以推动对警察进行全面改革。此前，一项法律修订将把检察官的调查权移交给警方，因此要求采取此类行动的呼声越来越高。

在济州岛南部发生的一起失踪人口案件引发争议后，要求进行警务改革的呼声也越来越高。该案中，一名警官被发现未经确认失踪人员的安全就过早地结案了多起失踪人口案件。

该机构在一份新闻稿中表示：“这是为了履行我们从根本上改革警察的承诺”，并补充说，细节将在稍后公布。

此前，韩国国家警察厅新任代理厅长金钟哲在周末听取了高级官员关于关键待决问题的汇报。

金说：“一线警员充分了解修订后的调查程序非常重要。”

他还指示官员确保所有警官在本月接受充分培训，熟悉修订后的《刑事诉讼法》，该法将剥夺检方的调查权。

李在明总统强调了警务改革的必要性，称警察很快将比任何其他政府机构拥有更大的权力。
