The Prisons Department of Malaysia is investigating claims by an NGO regarding issues with water supply, sanitation, and food provision at Kajang Prison.

The department emphasized its commitment to inmate welfare and announced immediate improvements to address any identified deficiencies in basic facilities and hygiene.

It urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely on official channels for accurate updates.

The investigation follows concerns raised by Lawyers for Liberty about the prison's conditions affecting inmates under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — The Prisons Department is investigating allegations by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) concerning water supply disruptions, sanitation facilities and food provision at Kajang Prison.

In a statement today, the department said the investigation was aimed at establishing the actual situation and ensuring that the issues raised received appropriate attention.

At the same time, priority will be given to immediate improvements to address any shortcomings identified, particularly those involving basic facilities, hygiene and inmates’ welfare,” the statement said.

The department said it consistently prioritised inmates’ welfare, health, hygiene and safety, including the provision of basic necessities, in accordance with existing regulations and procedures.

It also urged the public to refrain from speculation and the dissemination of unverified information that could cause confusion and concern, advising them to refer to the department’s official channels for accurate information.

Earlier today, Lawyers for Liberty, in a statement, raised concerns over alleged water shortages and unsanitary conditions at Kajang Prison.

The concerns followed a complaint received last Monday from lawyers representing inmates involved in trials under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), which are held within the prison premises.

The complaints included limited water supply, insufficient drinking water, difficulties accessing toilets, dirty food trays and concerns over the hygiene of meals provided to inmates. — Bernama
