Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said to engage with a Parliamentary Special Select Committee on proposed constitutional amendments to separate the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor.

These amendments, prepared in draft form by the committee, reflect efforts towards key institutional reforms following a decree by the Malay Rulers.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil mentioned that recommendations will be communicated back to the Conference of Rulers and noted additional reform efforts, including changes to parliamentary administration and amendments to the prime minister's tenure.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has been tasked with engaging a Parliamentary Special Select Committee on constitutional amendments to separate the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the announcement after a decree by the Malay Rulers on the proposed amendments at the recent Conference of Rulers meeting, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said today.

“The prime minister has instructed Datuk Seri Azalina to conduct the engagements and discussions with the Parliamentary Special Select Committee, which has already prepared a draft for the constitutional amendments,” Fahmi said at the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing, which was broadcast live.

“Any amendments or recommendations will then be communicated back to the Conference of Rulers,” he said.

Fahmi said the Cabinet was also briefed on the outcome of Anwar’s audience with the Conference of Rulers on proposed amendments to the prime minister’s tenure.

He said both proposals are part of the government’s key institutional reform efforts and need further refinement before they can proceed.

Separately, Fahmi said the Cabinet was told that Parliament now falls entirely under the Parliamentary Service Council, effectively ending executive control over its administration.

“This fulfills one of our promises and represents a significant institutional reform effort,” he said.
