A total of 5,278 domestic violence cases have been reported in Malaysia, with the numbers continuing to rise, according to Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

The ministry is focusing on counselling and women's empowerment to help women understand their rights, build confidence and achieve financial independence.

Talian Kasih recorded 104,784 calls by October 2026, showing increased public awareness of the helpline and its support services.

KUCHING, Oct 17 — A total of 5,278 domestic violence cases have been reported in Malaysia, with the number continuing to rise, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said the ministry was placing greater emphasis on counselling and women’s empowerment to help women better understand their rights, build confidence and achieve financial independence.

“When women are financially independent, they can be more confident in standing up for themselves and are less likely to tolerate abuse,” Nancy told reporters at the EmpowerUS 2026 seminar at the Sarawak State Library here today.

Commenting on the recent case in Negeri Sembilan involving a 35-year-old female customs officer who was allegedly murdered by her husband, Nancy said the ministry was looking into providing assistance to the victim’s family and children.

“We are making preparations to provide assistance, particularly for the children and the family of the victim,” she said, adding that the ministry remained ready to assist families in need.

In July and August, 632 domestic violence cases were recorded in each month, up from 601 in June.

However, the figures remained below the 766 cases recorded in April, the highest monthly total so far in 2026.

Meanwhile, Talian Kasih recorded 104,784 calls as of October 2026, surpassing the 98,050 calls received throughout 2025.

Nancy said the increase in calls indicated growing public awareness of the helpline and the assistance it provides.

“Even children know what to do. It is not just for abuse; it is also for those who are facing problems with their families and need help,” she added. — The Borneo Post
