Trailer driver runs red light, nearly hits bus and car in Jurong

A trailer driver caused a near-miss involving a bus and a car in Jurong on Friday (Sept 4) after running a red light along Jurong Port Road.

Dashcam footage of the incident shared with SG Road Vigilante and posted on its Facebook shows the trailer turning onto Corporation Road from Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim at about 12pm.

As the light turns red along Corporation Road, other vehicles are seen slowing down and coming to a stop.

The trailer driver, however, did not stop.

His action caused the trailer to nearly collide with the bus and a black saloon car that were moving off.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and a collision was avoided, as the trailer driver swerved in time and both the Tower Transit bus and car drivers managed to stop before impact.

AsiaOne has reached out to the police to check if a report was subsequently lodged by any motorist.

Separately, AsiaOne has contacted Tower Transit for comments on the incident.

The offence of failing to conform to traffic light signals carries a fine of $500 for heavy vehicle drivers and 12 demerit points.

Tougher traffic laws to curb road deaths and injuries

From January 2027, the Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS) will be revised.

Following the revision, the number of demerit points that can be accumulated before suspension will drop from 24 to 18.

This comes as Singapore recorded an increase in the number of accidents resulting in injuries in the first half of 2026, with 3,869 cases.

Meanwhile, under the Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill passed in Parliament on Aug 4, a new offence of purposeful endangerment was introduced.

This deals with a motorist who deliberately endangers another person using a vehicle and causing death.

"The Government's view is that such conduct must face harsher consequences," Second Minister for Home Affairs Sim Ann stated at the Second Reading of the Bill.

She also noted that the existing Road Traffic Act does not adequately distinguish between purposeful endangerment and dangerous driving.

Under the new offence, offenders could face jail of up to 15 years, discretionary caning and a fine, once it comes into effect.
