Parents jailed over fatal abuse of 8-month-old son

SINGAPORE - For nearly the entirety of his short life, eight-month-old Trevor Neo was smothered, shaken and hit by his parents, who found it funny abusing him.

On Oct 21, in the High Court, the baby’s father, Neo Jia Ming, 27, was sentenced to 16 years’ jail.

Trevor’s mother, Chloe Gan Ci Xuan, 23, was sentenced to 15 years and three months’ jail.

The married couple had on Oct 12 each pleaded guilty to three charges relating to Trevor’s abuse .

Neo had an additional domestic abuse charge for assaulting Gan multiple times .

In sentencing the pair, Justice Hoo Sheau Peng said that contrary to defence arguments the young couple was overwhelmed by the task of taking care of the baby, Gan and Neo were well-supported by family members and also had a nanny.

The judge said text messages between them made light of their physical abuse of Trevor and potential detrimental effects.

The judge compared the actions of Neo and Gan to that of the couple in the tragic case of four-year-old Megan Khung.

Megan’s mother Foo Li Ping was sentenced to 19 years’ jail, while Foo’s boyfriend Wong Shi Xiang was sentenced to 30 years’ jail and 17 strokes of the cane.

On Oct 21, Gan, who is petite and sports bobbed hair, exchanged a few words with her lawyer Josephus Tan. She did not speak to nor look at Neo.

Her parents and Neo’s mother were in court. They locked eyes with their children for a brief moment, then looked stoically ahead waiting for the case to start.

Gan and Neo abused Trevor by shaking him, or covering his mouth and nose to stop him from crying.

Gan also hit the infant on numerous occasions, resulting in bruises over his body.

Neo slapped Trevor, dug his fingers into his son’s mouth, and hit him. He also repeatedly pinched Trevor’s fingers to provoke a reaction from the baby, which he found funny.

The couple exchanged messages about the abuse, and joked about how the shaking could cause brain damage.

Trevor died after Gan smothered him, hit him in the face and turned him face down on the mattress on the night of Sept 1, 2024.

The baby was pronounced dead at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) at about 12.20am on Sept 2. The couple were arrested after hospital staff lodged a police report.

An autopsy could not determine the definitive cause of death.

Shook baby to stop cries

The court was told on Oct 12 that Gan moved out of her parents’ home to live with Neo in his Hougang flat after she found out she was pregnant in April 2023.

The couple married on Aug 2, 2023, and Trevor was born on Dec 9, 2023.

Following her discharge from hospital after giving birth, Gan stayed at her parents’ home and took care of Trevor with the help of a confinement lady. Neo stayed there for two weeks.

In January 2024, the couple and Trevor moved back to Neo’s flat, where two of his uncles also lived.

From February 2024, the couple engaged a nanny to look after Trevor during the day on weekdays. Other relatives helped to care for Trevor on weekends.

The couple frequently shook Trevor vigorously to stop his cries.

Once, when Trevor was about 41 days old, Gan shook him while Neo was at work.

She went back to sleep after Trevor became unconscious.

Later, when Trevor did not respond when she tried to feed him, she exchanged text messages with Neo about the incident.

Trevor was hospitalised for observation from Jan 18 to 23, 2024. No injuries were found.

Neo once covered Trevor’s nose and mouth with his hands for about a minute, until the baby vomited milk and turned purple.

After this incident, Neo told Gan he did not wish to take care of Trevor any more because he was afraid he might kill him.

Neo continued to abuse Trevor in this manner every day for two weeks in April 2024.

Gan soon followed suit. Initially, she covered the infant’s face with a blanket to muffle his cries.

By May 2024, when Trevor could pull the blanket away, she put her hands over his nose and mouth, and pressed down on his face to make him lose consciousness.

Gan also hit the baby whenever she became frustrated when he cried or did not fall asleep.

Grandmother knew of abuse

In May 2024, four months before Trevor died, Gan’s mother noticed the bruises on Trevor’s body and warned Gan not to hit the baby any more. Gan did not heed the warning.

On March 5, 2024, Neo slapped Trevor, leaving bruises on his face.

He texted Gan to tell her if people asked about the bruises, she should say he had accidentally dropped a phone on the baby’s face.

Once, on his way to the nanny’s home, Neo put his hand into Trevor’s mouth and dug around until the child bled under his tongue.

When the nanny asked what had happened, Neo lied he did not know.

At the nanny’s insistence, Neo and Gan took the baby to KKH on April 2, 2024. A medical examination noted redness under his tongue.

On Aug 2, 2024, Neo texted Gan, telling her not to hit Trevor at all until Tuesday to avoid leaving bruises, apparently because they were taking the baby to a doctor.

Neo also physically abused Gan between February and August 2024.

He punched her multiple times at an arcade at Kallang Wave Mall because he was angry she had played a game on her own even though he had told her he wanted to play with her.

He also punched her at a bus stop after she accidentally led them onto the wrong bus.

On the evening of Sept 1, 2024, Gan pulled a furry blanket over Trevor’s face and repeatedly pressed down to stop him from crying.

While doing this, she asked Neo: “How? You want the baby to die?”

She also remarked: “If anything happens, we will go to jail.”

When Trevor started crying again, she covered his nose and mouth with both hands, one on top of the other, and pressed down hard. She then pounded her right hand, which was covering Trevor’s face, with her left fist.

She then flipped Trevor over so that he lay face down and left him in that position before going to sleep.

At about 11.30pm, after Neo finished playing his mobile phone game, he noticed Trevor was not breathing and his hands were cold. He woke Gan up and asked her to check on him.

After they failed to resuscitate the baby, Neo told Gan to book a taxi to KKH. He said he did not want to incur the cost of summoning an ambulance when it was obvious to him Trevor was dead.

On the way there, he told Gan not to say anything. He said if the police did not get involved, they could continue living their lives and not worry about money any more.

胡秀萍法官在宣判时表示，与辩方辩称这对年轻夫妇不堪重负照顾婴儿的说法相反，甘和梁得到了家人的大力支持，并且还有一名保姆。

法官表示，他们之间的短信轻描淡写地对待了他们对特雷弗的身体虐待及其可能造成的有害影响。

法官将 Neo 和 Gan 的行为与四岁女童 Megan Khung 悲剧案件中的那对夫妇的行为进行了比较。

梅根的母亲傅丽萍被判处 19 年有期徒刑，而傅的男友黄世祥被判处 30 年有期徒刑和 17 下鞭刑。

10月21日，身材娇小、留着波波头的甘女士与她的律师约瑟夫·谭进行了简短的交谈。她没有和梁朝伟说话，也没有看他一眼。

她的父母和尼奥的母亲都在法庭上。他们和孩子们短暂地对视了一眼，然后神情肃穆地望着前方，等待庭审开始。

Gan 和 Neo 虐待 Trevor，他们摇晃他，或者捂住他的口鼻不让他哭。

甘某还多次殴打婴儿，导致婴儿身上多处瘀伤。

尼奥打了特雷弗一巴掌，把手指伸进他儿子的嘴里，还打了他。他还反复掐特雷弗的手指，故意激怒孩子，他觉得这样很好玩。

这对夫妇就虐待事件交换了信息，还开玩笑说摇晃可能会导致脑损伤。

2024 年 9 月 1 日晚，甘将特雷弗捂住口鼻，打他的脸，然后把他脸朝下放在床垫上，导致特雷弗死亡。

9月2日凌晨12点20分左右，婴儿在竹脚妇幼医院（KKH）被宣布死亡。医院工作人员报案后，这对夫妇被逮捕。

尸检未能确定确切的死因。

摇晃婴儿以停止哭泣

10 月 12 日，法庭获悉，甘女士在 2023 年 4 月发现自己怀孕后，便搬出父母家，与 Neo 一起住在他在后港的公寓里。

这对夫妇于 2023 年 8 月 2 日结婚，特雷弗于 2023 年 12 月 9 日出生。

甘女士产后出院后，回到父母家，在月嫂的帮助下照顾特雷弗。尼奥在那里住了两周。

2024 年 1 月，这对夫妇和特雷弗搬回了尼奥的公寓，他的两个叔叔也住在那里。

从2024年2月起，这对夫妇聘请了一位保姆在工作日白天照顾特雷弗。周末则由其他亲戚帮忙照顾特雷弗。

这对夫妇经常用力摇晃特雷弗，让他停止哭泣。

有一次，特雷弗出生大约 41 天的时候，趁着尼奥上班，甘摇晃了他。

特雷弗失去意识后，她又睡着了。

后来，当她试图喂特雷弗吃饭时，特雷弗没有反应，于是她就此事与尼奥互发了短信。

特雷弗于 2024 年 1 月 18 日至 23 日住院观察。未发现任何伤情。

尼奥曾用手捂住特雷弗的口鼻大约一分钟，直到婴儿吐出奶水，脸色发紫。

事件发生后，尼奥告诉甘，他不想再照顾特雷弗了，因为他害怕特雷弗会杀了他。

2024 年 4 月，尼奥连续两周每天都以这种方式虐待特雷弗。

甘女士很快也照做了。起初，她用毯子盖住婴儿的脸，以阻止他的哭声。

到 2024 年 5 月，当特雷弗能够掀开毯子时，她用手捂住他的口鼻，并按压他的脸，使他失去知觉。

每当孩子哭闹或睡不着时，甘女士都会因为感到沮丧而打孩子。

祖母知晓虐待事件

2024年5月，也就是特雷弗去世前四个月，甘的母亲注意到特雷弗身上的瘀伤，并警告甘不要再打孩子了。甘没有听从警告。

2024 年 3 月 5 日，尼奥打了特雷弗一巴掌，导致特雷弗脸上留下了瘀伤。

他发短信告诉甘，如果有人问起瘀伤，她应该说他不小心把手机掉在了婴儿脸上。

有一次，在去保姆家的路上，尼奥把手伸进特雷弗的嘴里，翻来翻去，直到孩子舌头底下流血。

当保姆问发生了什么事时，尼奥撒谎说他不知道。

在保姆的坚持下，Neo 和 Gan 于 2024 年 4 月 2 日带孩子去了 KKH 医院。医生检查发现孩子舌头下方发红。

2024 年 8 月 2 日，Neo 发短信给 Gan，告诉她周二之前千万不要打 Trevor，以免留下瘀伤，显然是因为她们要带孩子去看医生。

2024年2月至8月期间，Neo还对Gan进行了身体虐待。

在加冷购物中心的游戏厅里，他多次殴打她，因为他生气她独自玩游戏，尽管他曾告诉她他想和她一起玩。

她不小心带他们上了错误的公交车，之后他在公交车站打了她一拳。

2024 年 9 月 1 日晚，甘将一条毛毯盖在特雷弗的脸上，并反复按压，阻止他哭泣。

与此同时，她问尼奥：“怎么做？你想让孩子死吗？”

她还说：“如果出了什么事，我们都会坐牢。”

特雷弗再次哭了起来，她双手捂住他的口鼻，一只手叠在另一只手上，用力按压。然后，她用左拳猛击捂住特雷弗脸的右手。

然后她把特雷弗翻了个身，让他脸朝下躺着，让他保持这个姿势，然后就去睡觉了。

晚上11点半左右，尼奥玩完手机游戏后，发现特雷弗停止了呼吸，双手冰凉。他叫醒甘，让她去看看特雷弗的情况。

在抢救无效后，Neo让Gan叫辆出租车去KKH医院。他说，既然Trevor已经死了，他不想花钱叫救护车。

路上，他叮嘱甘什么都不要说。他说，如果警察不介入，他们就可以继续过日子，不用再为钱发愁了。
