In an interview marking his 25th year on the Selangor throne, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah emphasized the unchanged role of a constitutional monarch, highlighting the monarchy's responsibilities to uphold the Constitution, maintain stability, and act as a unifying symbol above political differences.

He underscored the importance of impartiality and fairness in preserving the monarchy as a trusted institution for all citizens.

The Sultan also stressed that leadership involves obligations, not privileges, and that these principles help foster national harmony and encourage respect for the rule of law.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 — Although society has evolved, the fundamental role of a constitutional monarch remains unchanged, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, said.

His Royal Highness said the Ruler had a responsibility to uphold the Constitution, preserve continuity and serve as a symbol of unity above political differences.

“The monarchy provides stability during times of change and reminds us that enduring institutions continue to play an important role in safeguarding national harmony,” he said in a special interview in conjunction with his 25 years on the Selangor throne.

Sultan Sharafuddin said the Constitution provided clear guidance on his responsibilities.

“My responsibility is to serve all the people of Selangor without favour or prejudice,” he said.

His Royal Highness noted that respect for constitutional principles, impartiality and fairness enabled the monarchy to remain a trusted institution for all citizens, regardless of their background or political beliefs.

The monarchy, he said, represented continuity, stability, service and responsibility.

“It reminds us that leadership carries obligations rather than privileges,” he said.

Sultan Sharafuddin said these values remained relevant because societies benefited from institutions that encouraged moderation, unity and respect for the rule of law. — Bernama
