Selangor police say investigation into Sunway Lagoon ride gone wrong to take at least three months as it waits for tech report

The investigation into the August 22 roller coaster incident at Sunway Lagoon, which injured 10 visitors, is expected to take three to four months due to the need for technical reports from multiple agencies.

Selangor police, alongside the occupational safety and health department, the Fire and Rescue Department, and forensic teams, are overseeing the inquiry.

Preliminary findings indicate a "sliding failure" triggered the ride's emergency braking system, and the attraction remains closed pending the investigation.

All affected visitors have since been discharged from hospital care.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — The investigation into the August 22 roller coaster incident at Sunway Lagoon that injured 10 visitors could take another three to four months.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said this is because investigators are waiting for technical reports from several agencies before they can wrap up the case.

“We estimate it may take three to four months for us to obtain the findings of the investigation. This is because we need technical reports from several agencies involved,” he told a news conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters in Shah Alam.

He said police were working with the occupational safety and health department (DOSH), Fire and Rescue Department, forensic teams and other agencies on the investigation.

“Police have taken statements from the staff operating the ride, victims and medical officers,” Shazeli said.

The ride accident occurred at about 9pm on August 22 and involved 22 local and foreign visitors aged between 11 and 44, with no deaths reported.

Selangor DOSH previously said a preliminary investigation found the roller coaster had been operating normally before a “sliding failure” about 200m from the disembarkation point triggered its automatic emergency braking system, causing it to stop abruptly.

As of September 2, all visitors treated and placed under observation at hospitals had been discharged.

The roller coaster remains closed pending completion of the investigation.
