Man arrested at Tuas Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle over 2kg of drugs

A 24-year-old Malaysian man was arrested at Tuas Checkpoint on Oct 21 for attempting to smuggle drugs into Singapore.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Monday (Oct 26) that the man had arrived on a Malaysia-registered motorcycle.

It was directed for enhanced checks, where search and examination officers found five bundles suspected to contain controlled drugs.

According to ICA, these were purportedly concealed in a tote bag hidden beneath a raincoat in the motorcycle's top box.

Following the discovery, officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were alerted and a further search of the motorcycle was conducted.

ICA said a total of about 1.9kg of heroin and 164g of ‘Ice’ were seized.

"The drugs seized have an estimated worth of more than $222,000 and could potentially feed the addiction of about 1,010 abusers for a week," it added.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.

Those found guilty of importing or exporting from Singapore more than 15g of diamorphine or "pure heroin" may face the death penalty.

ICA said that it will continue to work with CNB to prevent attempts to smuggle drugs across our borders.

It added that ICA officers will continue to conduct security checks at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle undesirable persons, weapons, explosives and other contrabands into Singapore.

案件调查仍在进行中。

凡被判犯有从新加坡进口或出口超过 15 克二乙酰吗啡（或“纯海洛因”）罪行的人，都可能面临死刑。

ICA表示，将继续与CNB合作，防止有人企图走私毒品越境。

声明还补充说，移民与关卡局官员将继续在检查站进行安全检查，以防止有人企图将不受欢迎的人员、武器、爆炸物和其他违禁品走私到新加坡。
