German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will make a two-day official visit to Singapore from Tuesday (Oct 27).

The visit is his first to Singapore and reaffirms the warm, longstanding and multifaceted partnership between Singapore and Germany, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Monday.

A lawyer by training, Merz was elected on May 6, 2025.

He will be hosted to a welcome ceremony by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, before the two leaders hold a bilateral meeting. The prime minister will also host an official dinner in Chancellor Merz's honour.

The chancellor will call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and be hosted to lunch by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

He is scheduled to deliver the 49th Singapore Lecture, organised by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, titled "Germany and the Indo-Pacific: Partnership, competitiveness, and resilience in a changing world".

Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo will chair the session.

Singapore-Germany relations

Relations between Singapore and Germany are longstanding, substantive and multifaceted, spanning the economic, defence, science and technology, and people-to-people fields.

In 1965, Germany was among the first countries to recognise Singapore's independence, with the first German Chancellor's visit made in 1978 by Helmut Schmidt.

Since then, every successive chancellor has visited Singapore.

The two countries also raised their ties to a strategic partnership in November 2024, with frequent high-level visits.

The Republic's warships also have a German connection, with both the new Sentinel-class Offshore Patrol Vessel and Invincible-class submarines made in shipyards there.

Meanwhile, bilateral trade in goods with Germany grew to $23.4 billion in 2025, while services trade increased to around $14.1 billion in 2024.

Beyond hardware and numbers, people-to-people ties are also strong, with nearly 360,000 visitors from Germany visiting the city state last year.
