Come first quarter of next year, Sunday cyclists at Seletar Aerospace Park can look forward to an extended route for their laps, after a 6.6km-long extension to the existing Sunday cycling lane is completed.

Work on the extension will commence in November.

First introduced as a six-month trial at West Camp Road in October 2022 , the cycling lane is a dedicated on-road cycling lane that operates on Sundays from 5am to 11am.

It was made permanent in April 2023 following positive outcomes from the trial, which sought to assess the feasibility of providing dedicated road space for larger group cycling during periods of low vehicular traffic.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Wednesday (Oct 28) that it will be extending the existing Sunday cycling lane at West Camp Road to include Seletar Aerospace Drive and Punggol Barat Drive.

"The 6.6km extension will increase the total length of the Sunday cycling lane at Seletar Aerospace Park from 4.6km to 11.2km, providing cyclists with a longer and more continuous route," the authority added.

Explaining its rationale, LTA said the dedicated lane has been well utilised since its implementation, and that both traffic conditions and bus operations have remained smooth.

Through its engagements with the Singapore Cycling Federation and stakeholders along Seletar Aerospace Drive, the authority noted broad support for the initiative to provide a longer, continuous cycling route around the Seletar Aerospace Park.

The area is also home to the Hampstead Wetlands Park that provides a conducive environment for plants, birds and other wildlife that inhabit freshwater ecosystems, according to the National Parks Board.

Things to note for cyclists, motorists

LTA said that the extended cycling route will adopt similar design and operating guidelines to the existing Sunday cycling lane at West Camp Road.

This means that the lane will be demarcated by solid blue lane markings except near junctions and development accesses where the lane is demarcated by dotted blue lane markings and red traverse markings.

Motorists may use the road areas demarcated by dotted blue lanes and red traverse markings to turn into and out of roads during cycling lane hours.

They are reminded to filter onto these stretches with care as cyclists and buses may be using the lane.

Cyclists are also reminded to stay within the cycling lane and obey traffic signals.

Those who choose to use the Sunday cycling lanes during non-operational hours are strongly reminded to comply with prevailing cycling regulations, including on group size and traffic rules.
