A Chinese construction boss was beaten to death in Bangkok on Tuesday evening after a furious wage dispute with two Burmese married couples. Yang Zhongshu, 39, arrived at a Lat Krabang building site to pay nearly 60 workers. However, four employees demanded to quit immediately after he criticised their work. When Yang withheld their wages over the required notice period, violence followed. Two Burmese men reportedly battered him with a steel bar, while a knife was also used. His Chinese companion, 49, was beaten and stabbed. Meanwhile, up to ฿50,000 vanished as the suspects fled. Other workers scattered, some fearing immigration checks. By Wednesday, police had identified one suspect, recovered bloodstained cash and weapons, and launched a manhunt for both couples.

A Chinese construction boss was beaten to death in Bangkok on Tuesday evening after a furious confrontation with four Burmese workers. The two married couples wanted to quit immediately after their employer criticised their work.

However, he refused to pay their outstanding wages, insisting they had failed to give the required notice. The dispute ended in a savage attack with a metal bar and a knife.

The 39-year-old Chinese employer died from severe head injuries, while his companion was beaten and stabbed. Worse, up to ฿50,000 disappeared as the four suspects fled. By Wednesday, police had identified one Burmese suspect and launched a manhunt for both couples.

Police rush to Bangkok construction camp and find Chinese employer dying from brutal head injuries

The killing occurred at a construction workers’ camp in Lat Krabang, eastern Bangkok, on Tuesday, 27 October. Police received an emergency report at approximately 8 pm. The compound was located in Soi Phatthana Chonnabot 3, Yaek 15, in Khlong Song Ton Nun. Nearly 60 Burmese construction workers were employed at the site.

Police Captain Jannarong Areerong, an investigator at Lat Krabang Police Station, responded to the emergency. Police Colonel Somkid Prachensuk, superintendent of the station, also attended.

At the same time, emergency personnel from the Erawan Medical Centre rushed to the compound. Doctors from Police General Hospital, forensic specialists and Poh Teck Tung Foundation rescuers joined the response.

Inside a makeshift workers’ shelter surrounded by corrugated metal fencing, officers discovered a critically injured Chinese man. He was identified as Yang Zhongshu, 39, a construction employer who had arrived earlier to distribute wages.

Yang lay on his back, unconscious and barely breathing. He was wearing a black T-shirt and black shorts. His head and face had suffered severe injuries. Blood was coming from his mouth and nose.

Chinese employer dies as wage payment visit turns into confrontation with two Burmese married couples

Emergency workers immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Despite their efforts, Yang died from his injuries. Nearby, police discovered another Chinese national who had also been attacked. The man, identified as Shisheng, 49, had suffered head injuries and a stab wound to his back. Rescue personnel subsequently transferred him to Sirindhorn Hospital for urgent treatment.

The two Chinese men were friends and had arrived together to distribute monthly wages. Investigators established that they reached the compound at approximately 6.30 pm, around 90 minutes before the emergency report.

Their purpose was to pay nearly 60 Burmese construction workers employed at the site. Instead, the evening’s wage distribution ended in a fatal confrontation involving two Burmese married couples.

The four workers wanted to leave their employment immediately. Their demand followed a disagreement with Yang over the quality of their construction work. According to witnesses, the Chinese employer had criticised the four employees for failing to meet his requirements. He reportedly accused them of poor workmanship. Witnesses also said he swore at the workers during the confrontation.

The criticism angered the two couples. They demanded to resign from their jobs without serving any further notice.

However, Yang refused to release their outstanding wages. The employer reportedly insisted that the workers had failed to comply with their employment arrangements. Under those arrangements, they were required to provide advance notice before leaving their jobs.

Four Burmese workers attack Chinese boss with metal bar and knife before fleeing construction camp

The couples nevertheless insisted on leaving immediately. The disagreement therefore shifted from complaints about construction standards to their wages and resignation demands. Yang maintained his refusal to pay the four workers. In response, the couples continued demanding their money. Witnesses described an increasingly heated confrontation as the employer stood by his decision.

The four Burmese nationals reportedly became furious when Yang refused to release the wages they were owed. The argument then turned violent. Investigators believe the four workers attacked Yang inside the construction camp. The two Burmese men reportedly struck him with a steel reinforcing bar. A knife was also used during the assault.

The blows caused devastating injuries to Yang’s head and face. His Chinese companion, He Shisheng, was also attacked. He suffered head injuries and was stabbed in the back. Both men were left seriously injured inside the compound. Following the violence, the four Burmese suspects reportedly fled.

The assault unfolded inside a camp housing dozens of other Burmese workers. However, witness accounts indicated that the remaining employees did not participate in the attack. Instead, workers scattered as the confrontation became violent. Some reportedly fled the immediate area without intervening. Police later established that several workers lacked passports and were still applying for documentation.

Workers scatter after fatal assault as police investigate missing wages and fleeing Burmese suspects

According to initial accounts, their immigration circumstances contributed to their reluctance to become involved. Consequently, investigators had to reconstruct the confrontation after many workers had scattered.

Officers began gathering statements from those who witnessed the argument and subsequent violence. Their inquiries focused on the two married couples and their dispute with the Chinese employer.

In a further development, investigators discovered that a substantial amount of money had disappeared following the attack. Police suspect the four workers took between ฿40,000 and ฿50,000 belonging to Yang.

The cash was associated with the monthly wages being distributed that evening. As a result, officers were investigating the fatal assault alongside the reported disappearance of the money.

Police began examining the compound for evidence after emergency personnel arrived. Among the items recovered was a steel reinforcing bar measuring approximately 60 centimetres. Investigators believe the metal bar was used to strike Yang during the confrontation. Separately, officers discovered a folding knife inside the dead man’s shoulder bag.

Bloodstained banknotes and weapons recovered as investigators reconstruct fatal construction camp attack

Forensic officers also recovered bloodstained banknotes from a wage-payment envelope. The money included ฿100 notes and a ฿1,000 note. These were collected alongside other material from the scene.

Police secured the steel bar, folding knife and banknotes for forensic examination. The recovered items formed part of the investigation into the fatal beating and the injuries inflicted on He.

The bloodstained money was particularly relevant to the inquiry into the reported theft. Yang had arrived at the compound carrying cash intended for the workers’ salaries. However, the confrontation prevented the wage distribution from proceeding as planned. Investigators were examining both the assault and the circumstances surrounding the missing money.

In parallel, police began reconstructing the events that led to Yang’s death. Their inquiries established that the confrontation began with criticism of the workers’ performance. It then escalated over their demand to resign immediately. According to witnesses, Yang refused to pay the four employees because they had not provided advance notice.

Wage dispute over immediate resignations and required notice becomes central to fatal assault inquiry

Thai newspaper Daily News reported that the notice requirement formed part of their employment agreement. Nevertheless, the four workers reportedly insisted on leaving without completing the required notice period. Yang maintained his refusal to release their outstanding wages. The disagreement subsequently developed into the violent confrontation that left him dead.

The dispute involved both the quality of the workers’ performance and the conditions governing their departure. Yang had criticised the four employees before they demanded to resign. He then refused to pay their wages, citing their failure to provide notice. Notably, witness accounts identified this refusal as a central factor in the escalating argument.

Thailand’s Labour Protection Act regulates employment termination, notice requirements and the payment of outstanding wages. Failure to provide contractual notice does not automatically extinguish entitlement to wages already earned. The criminal investigation, however, centred on the fatal assault, the injuries suffered by He and the missing cash.

On another front, Lat Krabang police launched an operation to trace the four Burmese nationals. Investigators began examining CCTV footage covering possible escape routes from the construction camp. Officers sought to establish where the suspects went after leaving the compound. They also began tracing the identities and movements of the two married couples.

Police identify 25-year-old Burmese suspect as CCTV search intensifies for the two married couples

By Wednesday, 28 October, one of the four suspects had reportedly been identified. Local sources named him as Soe Htike Aung, a 25-year-old Burmese national. Police were attempting to locate him alongside the other three suspects. The investigation remained focused on all four workers suspected of participating in the confrontation.

Officers were seeking to bring the two couples into custody for questioning and criminal proceedings. As part of the investigation, forensic specialists examined the evidence recovered from the shelter. The steel reinforcing bar was significant because witnesses described its use during the assault. The weapon measured approximately 60 centimetres and was recovered at the scene.

The folding knife found inside Yang’s shoulder bag was also collected for examination. In addition, the bloodstained banknotes provided evidence connected to the wage distribution. Police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the remaining cash. The reported loss of ฿40,000 to ฿50,000 added another element to the criminal case.

The attack left investigators examining a confrontation that had developed rapidly after the two Chinese men arrived. Yang and He reached the compound at approximately 6.30pm. They had come to distribute monthly salaries to nearly 60 Burmese workers. Within approximately 90 minutes, police were responding to a violent incident involving both men.

Investigators piece together brutal assault that left Chinese employer dead and companion stabbed

The two married couples reportedly wanted to resign following criticism of their performance. Their employer refused to release their wages because they had not provided the required advance notice. The disagreement then developed into an assault involving a metal bar and knife. Yang suffered fatal head injuries, while He sustained a stab wound and injuries to his head.

The severity of Yang’s injuries was apparent when emergency personnel entered the workers’ shelter. He was unconscious, barely breathing and bleeding from his mouth and nose. Despite attempts to revive him, he died shortly afterwards. He Shisheng was transferred to Sirindhorn Hospital after being found injured nearby.

Police were therefore investigating attacks on both Chinese men. Investigators were also attempting to establish the movements of the suspects after they fled. CCTV cameras along possible escape routes became an important part of the search. Officers relied on witness accounts from the construction camp to reconstruct the violence.

The investigation faced complications because some workers had scattered following the assault. Several employees reportedly lacked passports and were still awaiting documentation. Even so, police obtained accounts describing the initial argument, resignation demands and subsequent attack. Those accounts identified the two Burmese married couples as the central suspects.

Bangkok police hunt four Burmese workers after deadly wage dispute and reported disappearance of cash

The confrontation occurred after Yang and He arrived at the camp at approximately 6.30 pm. By around 8 pm, police had received the emergency report that brought officers and rescuers to the scene. Yang was subsequently pronounced dead following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts. His companion was taken to hospital while investigators secured the compound.

The case attracted extensive reporting in the Thai press on Wednesday. Matichon detailed the police response, injuries, recovered weapons and witness accounts from the construction camp. Daily News separately reported the dispute over immediate resignation and the contractual notice requirement. It also identified Soe Htike Aung, 25, as one of the four Burmese suspects.

The suspected theft of cash remained another focus of the investigation. The money had been brought to the construction camp for the payment of monthly wages. Yet investigators believe between ฿40,000 and ฿50,000 disappeared following the violence. The four Burmese suspects reportedly fled immediately after the confrontation.

By Wednesday, Lat Krabang police were hunting the two Burmese married couples. Investigators were reviewing CCTV footage, collecting forensic evidence and examining the reported disappearance of the wage money. Yang had arrived to pay nearly 60 construction workers. Instead, he was beaten to death following a dispute over four employees’ demands to resign immediately. His Chinese companion was left seriously injured, while the four suspects remained the focus of the police manhunt.
