Condoms, lubricants, stained mattress: Agent says he unknowingly rented condo to suspected vice syndicate

What started as a regular rental arrangement turned into a nightmare for a landlord, who began suspecting that the condo unit was allegedly being used for illegal vice activities.

When property agent Simon Lum and the landlord conducted a flat inspection, they purportedly discovered condoms, lubricants and a stained mattress.

In a TikTok post on Monday (Oct 26), Lum said there was no warning signs that the house would allegedly become a den for suspected vice activities.

The 46-year-old told AsiaOne on Tuesday that the incident occurred in September at a freehold condo located near Guillemard Road.

According to him, the male tenant had very quickly placed an offer after briefly viewing the unit.

"Everything appeared perfectly normal when we handed over the unit. The tenant had provided his identification documents, and there was nothing particularly suspicious about him at the beginning," Lum said.

Concerned neighbours and faulty intercoms

Soon after the tenancy began, a neighbour informed the landlord about the many visitors who were allegedly ushered in by a woman.

Lum said this condo operated without security personnel. Visitors would usually call their hosts via the intercom system, which was not working. Hence, their host would have to escort them in.

"It was actually the faulty intercom that made the unusual visitor patterns much more noticeable," he told AsiaOne.

When Lum and the landlord questioned the tenant, he purportedly brushed their concerns aside by insisting he was conducting meetings with colleagues as he was working from home.

The tenant also attributed the presence of the woman to the two female cleaners he had supposedly engaged.

Lum told AsiaOne that he and the landlord visited the condo unit and observed men being escorted to the unit by a woman, just as the neighbour had said.

They arranged a scheduled inspection of the property with the tenant — only for the latter to lose contact.

Concerned that something had happened to the tenant, Lum said he called the police and subsequently discovered that the unit had been vacated.

While all personal belongings had been cleared, they found condoms, unused lubricants and a heavily stained mattress.

Lum acknowledged that it has not been officially established that any illegal activities had occurred, but said he and the landlord remain suspicious.

As the tenant remained uncontactable, the landlord subsequently regained possession of the unit.

He said a police report was lodged, but the landlord declined to share additional details.
