As ubiquitous as it is in pop culture as a torture device, the iron maiden was never actually used as one.
The idea of it being utilised for painful punishment first arose following the appearance of the Iron Maiden of Nuremberg (“Nurnberger Eiserne Jungfrau”) at the city’s 1857 torture exhibition.
