Perak steps up preparations for Super El Nino expected to last until early 2027

The Perak State Government is actively preparing for the impacts of the Super El Nino phenomenon, expected to last until early 2027, by implementing comprehensive measures through various state agencies.

The State Disaster Management Committee, alongside the Malaysian Meteorological Department and other agencies, is closely monitoring weather forecasts and water levels.

Proactive steps include activating a phased mitigation plan for water supply, mobilizing resources for agriculture, and coordinating potential cloud seeding operations.

Additionally, environmental measures such as the activation of open burning and peatland fire action plans are in place to mitigate air quality issues.

IPOH, Sept 9 — The Perak State Government is taking preparedness measures through the agencies involved to face the challenges of the impact of the Super El Nino phenomenon which began on May 14 and is expected to last until early 2027.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said that through the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) and the Perak Water Board (LAP) are continuously monitoring and reporting current weather forecasts and water levels at the main dams.

“At the same time, the Department of Environment (DOE) is monitoring the Air Pollution Index (API) readings regularly at each location to enable early warnings to be issued quickly,” he said during a question and answer session at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

He was responding to a question from Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad (PN-Bota) who wanted to know what the state government’s comprehensive action plan is to face the Super El Nino phenomenon which is expected to affect water supply, agriculture, public health and the environment.

Explaining further, Saarani, who is also the Kota Tampan assemblyman, said LAP had taken proactive steps to activate a phased mitigation plan that included optimising the operation of the Water Treatment Plant (WTP), rezoning the supply, mobilising water tankers, placing static tanks and using alternative water sources.

“LAP has also submitted an application for an allocation of RM2.4 million to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) for mitigation actions in affected areas and is working closely with the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) through a war room mechanism to proactively manage any risk of water crisis,” he said.

For the agricultural sector, Saarani said efficient management of water resource distribution through main irrigation infrastructure and mobilisation of mobile pumps was being implemented for water recycling purposes.

This included structured agricultural areas such as IADA Seberang Perak, where strict monitoring was carried out due to the reliance on gravity flow irrigation systems which were affected when the water level dropped.

“If the situation becomes more critical, JPBN in collaboration with NADMA and MetMalaysia is ready to coordinate cloud seeding operations in target reservoir areas,” he said.

He also said that the Department of Agriculture together with the Department of Minerals and Geosciences (JMG) have also updated and activated the use of more than 100 tube wells in strategic areas to channel groundwater resources for crop and livestock use.

Meanwhile, the Perak State DOE has activated the National Open Burning Action Plan (PTPTK) and the Peatland Fire Operation Action Plan through daily patrols during the day, night, and public holidays at various hotspots.

He said that if there is a need, the State Government will activate the state Disaster Operations Control Centre (PKOB) under the management of JPBN to enable logistics coordination and distribution of emergency water supplies to be implemented quickly. — Bernama
