Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying emphasized the importance of not treating domestic violence as a private issue, urging victims to seek help and highlighting its widespread impact on individuals and society.

Lim advocates for collective responsibility in preventing violence and supporting victims, underlined by accessible services like Talian Kasih.

She also expressed condolences for the death of Malaysian national Tan Kah Ming, suspected to be linked to domestic violence, and urged respect for the family's privacy during the investigation.

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 11 — Domestic violence should not be treated as a private matter or endured alone, as it is a serious form of violence that must not be normalised under any circumstances, said Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying.

She said domestic violence can have a profound impact not only on victims, but also on children, families and the wellbeing of society as a whole.

Lim said efforts to prevent violence, protect victims and ensure they receive the necessary support and access to appropriate assistance must be a shared responsibility.

“To those facing domestic violence, I want to emphasise that you are not alone and that you have the right to seek help and protection,” she said in a Facebook post yesterday.

Lim urged victims to seek immediate help from someone they trust or through appropriate support services, including Talian Kasih at 15999 and WhatsApp at 019-261 5999, which operate round the clock, seven days a week.

She said the ministry will continue to strengthen efforts to prevent violence and provide protection and support to victims and affected families, in line with existing laws and protection mechanisms.

Meanwhile, Lim expressed sadness at the news of the death of Malaysian national Tan Kah Ming in Perth, Australia, last month, which is believed to be linked to domestic violence.

She also conveyed her condolences to the deceased’s family following the tragic loss, saying that the woman’s children and family members will understandably be the focus of attention during this difficult time.

“Regarding the case in Perth, I respect the investigation process and actions taken by the Australian Government. We will leave matters concerning the facts and progress of the investigation to the relevant authorities.

“In this difficult and deeply painful time, let us respect the privacy of Tan’s family and give them the space they need to grieve and come to terms with their loss,” she said.

Tan, 28, from Penang, was reported to have died after allegedly being assaulted late last month.

According to media reports, the mother of three was found unconscious at a residence on Taree Street, St James, at 8.30pm on August 26 before being rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, where she died shortly after arriving. — Bernama
