Thai immigration and Metropolitan Police officers infiltrated the temple in white clothing after an FBI request from the US Embassy in Bangkok. Within two days, investigators traced Joshua through travel records, confirmed his identity inside the retreat and moved in during meditation. An American wanted on serious child sexual assault charges in New Hampshire was arrested inside a Chiang Mai temple on Thursday. Thai police caught the 35-year-old during a Buddhist meditation retreat after officers secretly joined the gathering. The operation followed a request from the FBI’s Legal Attaché office at the US Embassy in Bangkok. Within two days, Thai investigators had tracked their target to northern Thailand and moved in.

Police identified the suspect only as Joshua, while withholding his surname. However, investigators confirmed he is a 35-year-old American citizen wanted under a New Hampshire state court warrant. The warrant lists the offence of Aggravated Felonious Sexual Assault. More seriously, Thai police said the accusations concern several girls aged under 16.

According to the police account, Joshua and another person committed sexual offences against the girls. Afterwards, Joshua left the United States before his arrest there.

FBI request sends Thai investigators north before undercover officers enter Chiang Mai Buddhist retreat

American law enforcement agencies then began searching for him as a fugitive from justice. Eventually, that hunt crossed the Pacific and reached Thailand.

The breakthrough came on Tuesday, September 8. That day, the FBI’s Legal Attaché office contacted Thailand’s Immigration Bureau and requested cooperation. US officials wanted Joshua located and returned to America for further legal proceedings. In response, Thai investigators immediately began tracing his immigration records, travel history and recent movements.

Officers from Immigration Division 3 joined investigators from the Metropolitan Police Investigation Bureau. In parallel, the IDMB investigation team worked with information supplied by the FBI. Investigators checked travel records and worked to establish Joshua’s whereabouts. Soon, the international search narrowed to Chiang Mai province.

Yet Joshua was not found inside a hotel, condominium or private residence. Instead, police discovered he was participating in Buddhist religious practice at a temple. More specifically, the wanted American had entered a meditation retreat. That discovery forced investigators to adopt an unusual strategy.

Sending uniformed police directly into the retreat risked alerting Joshua before his identity was confirmed. Therefore, investigators decided to enter quietly and get close to him. Officers swapped police uniforms for white clothing commonly worn by lay Buddhist practitioners. They then joined the retreat while concealing their real purpose.

Undercover officers spend two days inside Buddhist retreat before moving in during meditation session

Inside, the undercover officers participated alongside other Buddhist practitioners while watching the American. Meanwhile, temple staff cooperated with investigators and supported the operation. Police did not immediately approach Joshua or reveal themselves. Instead, they remained among the practitioners while confirming they had found the correct man.

The surveillance continued into a second day. By then, investigators had positively confirmed Joshua’s identity. At that point, the undercover operation switched rapidly into an arrest. Officers approached him during a meditation session and revealed that they were police and immigration investigators.

At the same time, Joshua was informed that his permission to remain in Thailand had been revoked. Police said the American acknowledged that he was the man wanted by US law enforcement agencies. Consequently, officers arrested him and took him into immigration custody. No confrontation or resistance was reported.

The operation ended just two days after the FBI approached Thai officials. Notably, the arrest required both international intelligence and undercover surveillance inside a religious retreat. Police first followed immigration and travel records across Thailand. Finally, their search ended beside their target during Buddhist practice in Chiang Mai.

American faces deportation to New Hampshire as full identity and details of US case remain undisclosed

Joshua will initially be transferred to an Immigration Detention Centre. There, officials will complete procedures for his removal from Thailand. Subsequently, US officials are expected to arrange officers to escort him back to America. He will then face proceedings arising from the outstanding New Hampshire warrant.

For now, no departure date has been announced. Thai police have also not identified the New Hampshire court that issued the warrant. Separately, Joshua’s surname and American hometown remain undisclosed. The warrant date has not been released either.

Those missing details prevent a firm independent identification of the underlying New Hampshire prosecution. Likewise, police have not identified the second person reportedly involved in the case. The precise location of the reported offences also remains undisclosed. Nor have investigators released the dates when they were said to have occurred.

Still, Thai police have identified the criminal offence contained in the warrant. Joshua is wanted for Aggravated Felonious Sexual Assault under New Hampshire law. Crucially, that is a specific statutory offence rather than a general description of sexual misconduct. It is contained in New Hampshire RSA 632-A:2.

New Hampshire law covers serious sexual offences as police say case involves several girls under 16

The statute covers serious sexual offences committed under several specified circumstances. Among its provisions are offences involving victims below specified ages. It also addresses a pattern of sexual assault involving someone younger than 16. In this case, Thai reports specifically refer to several female victims under 16.

However, police have not released the girls’ precise ages. Their identities have not been published in the material surrounding Thursday’s arrest. Neither has the New Hampshire location connected with the accusations been disclosed. As a result, important parts of the American investigation remain outside the public Thai account.

Police have also not said when Joshua left the United States. Furthermore, the reports do not establish when he first entered Thailand. His movements before reaching Chiang Mai have not been fully detailed. Therefore, it remains unclear how long he had been staying in the kingdom.

What is established is the speed of the hunt after the FBI request arrived. On September 8, American officials asked Thai immigration investigators to locate the fugitive. Immediately afterwards, Thai officers began examining Joshua’s immigration and travel records. Information from the FBI helped narrow the search.

The wanted American had entered a Buddhist retreat. Accordingly, police needed surveillance officers who could move inside without drawing attention. A conventional uniformed approach could have ended their ability to monitor him quietly. Instead, officers entered as ordinary practitioners dressed in white.

The strategy gave investigators access to the same religious setting as their target. Once inside, they observed Joshua while continuing the identification process. Temple staff, meanwhile, cooperated with the operation. The officers could therefore remain close while avoiding an immediate confrontation.

Some initial accounts described the investigators as disguised as monks. However, detailed reports state that they wore white clothing and posed as Buddhist practitioners. Thai Buddhist monks generally wear saffron-coloured robes. By contrast, white clothing is commonly associated with laypeople undertaking religious practice.

The distinction matches the detailed account of the operation. Officers were able to join the retreat without pretending to hold ordained religious status. From there, they monitored Joshua while completing their checks. Only after confirmation did the team reveal its presence.

On the second day, police were satisfied that the man before them was their target. Without further delay, the undercover officers approached Joshua during the meditation retreat. They disclosed their identities and informed him of the immigration action against him. Police said he then acknowledged being the American sought by US officials.

His revoked immigration status now forms the immediate basis for his removal from Thailand. Rather than announcing a separate Thai prosecution, officers transferred Joshua into immigration custody. He will remain within that system while officials prepare his departure. Afterwards, American personnel are expected to escort him home.

Some Thai reports refer to extradition officers accompanying Joshua during the return journey. Nevertheless, the procedure announced in Thailand centres upon immigration revocation and deportation. No separate Thai criminal charge was announced after Thursday’s arrest. Likewise, police reported no sexual offence committed by Joshua while in Thailand.

Undercover officers confirm suspect before immigration revocation clears way for deportation from Thailand

Instead, the operation targeted an American wanted under an existing New Hampshire warrant. The FBI supplied information through its Bangkok presence. Thai police then used domestic immigration and travel information to find him. Ultimately, undercover officers completed the operation inside the Chiang Mai retreat.

Several senior Thai officers were identified in reports surrounding the arrest. Among them was Pol Col Suriya Phuangsombat of Immigration Division 3. He serves as superintendent of its Investigation Division. Pol Lt Col Ithithorn Prasertsak, a deputy superintendent, was also named.

On another front, Metropolitan Police investigators participated through the IDMB investigation team. Pol Lt Col Nithi Piyaphan was also identified in reporting surrounding the operation. He is a deputy superintendent with responsibilities including intelligence analysis and special equipment. Their combined investigation led officers directly to the temple.

Police have not identified that temple publicly. Nonetheless, they confirmed that its staff cooperated with investigators. The religious establishment therefore became the final location in a search originating with a New Hampshire court warrant. Within its grounds, officers finally came face-to-face with the wanted American.

Thai and US teams combine intelligence and immigration records to end hunt inside Chiang Mai temple

Yet the decision to withhold Joshua’s surname leaves the American case difficult to reconstruct independently. New Hampshire has numerous prosecutions involving Aggravated Felonious Sexual Assault. A first name and age alone cannot safely identify a particular defendant. Other details are therefore needed before making a reliable match.

Those identifiers could include his surname, hometown, issuing court, warrant date or docket number. Equally, the dates and location of the reported offences could provide a firm connection. None of those details appears in the information released by Thai police. Consequently, the defendant cannot safely be matched with a specific public New Hampshire prosecution.

The available police account does establish several important points. Joshua is 35 and an American citizen. He is wanted under a New Hampshire state court warrant for Aggravated Felonious Sexual Assault. Additionally, police say the case concerns several girls younger than 16.

Another person is reportedly implicated in the accusations. Following the reported offences, Joshua left the United States before being arrested there. The FBI later sought Thai assistance in locating him. That request reached the Immigration Bureau on September 8.

From there, the investigation moved fast. Thai officers checked records and traced Joshua north to Chiang Mai. Then they discovered he was attending a Buddhist meditation retreat. Rather than charge straight inside, investigators built an undercover operation around the setting.

Officers dressed in white and quietly joined the retreat. At the same time, temple staff cooperated with the police team. Investigators stayed among the practitioners while watching Joshua and verifying his identity. The surveillance lasted into the second day.

Once confirmation came, the operation ended quickly. Police approached Joshua during the meditation session and disclosed their identities. Immigration officers informed him that his permission to remain in Thailand had been cancelled. According to police, he admitted being the man wanted in America.

Officers then took Joshua into custody without any reported struggle. Barely two days had passed since the FBI’s Bangkok office requested Thai assistance. The international search had ended inside a Chiang Mai meditation retreat.

Now the process moves from pursuit to removal. Joshua is expected to enter an Immigration Detention Centre before arrangements are completed. US officers will then escort him back to America, according to Thai police. New Hampshire will be the destination for the next stage of the case.

Importantly, Thursday’s arrest does not establish guilt on the American charges. Those accusations remain matters for the US courts. The Thai operation instead established that officers had located the man identified under the outstanding warrant. Police then arrested him through Thailand’s immigration process.

Meanwhile, major details of the New Hampshire case remain undisclosed in Thailand. Officials have not released Joshua’s full name, hometown or issuing court. They have not named the other person reportedly involved. Neither have they provided the precise dates and locations connected with the accusations.

Even so, the sequence behind the Chiang Mai operation is clear. American investigators were seeking a 35-year-old man wanted on serious child sexual assault charges. The FBI asked Thailand for assistance. Thai investigators then traced him to a Buddhist retreat.

There, police faced an unusual final stage to the hunt. Officers could not simply rely upon immigration records from a desk. They needed to enter the retreat, get close to Joshua and confirm his identity. So they dressed in white and joined the Buddhist practitioners around him.

The next move belongs to immigration officials and their American counterparts. Joshua is expected to be transferred to an immigration detention facility before deportation arrangements are completed. Afterwards, US officers are expected to escort him across the Pacific.
