MAF ready to support emergency Flying Doctor Service evacuations, says Chief of Defence Forces

The Malaysian Armed Forces are prepared to support the Health Ministry with emergency medical evacuations after a helicopter crash in Sarawak.

The MAF has sufficient helicopters and facilities ready for missions, focusing on emergency support rather than routine medical operations.

The crash near Long Lellang resulted in five fatalities, including medical personnel, prompting collaboration between government agencies for temporary mercy flights.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) is ready to deploy its air assets to assist the Health Ministry (MoH) in providing Flying Doctor Service (FDS), particularly for emergency medical evacuations in remote areas.

Chief of Defence Forces Gen Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman said the move was aimed at meeting the ministry’s urgent needs following last Tuesday’s FDS helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Sarawak.

He said the MAF had sufficient facilities and helicopters to undertake the missions and was ready to cooperate once an official request was coordinated at ministry level.

“As a provider of services in the context of comprehensive security and emergency assistance, we will fill the gap during this critical period, particularly in areas that are difficult to access.

“We are ready to meet the ministry’s request and coordinate the operational efforts to ensure that services for the people are not disrupted,” he said during a special interview with the Chief of Defence Forces in conjunction with the 93rd MAF Day at Wisma Pertahanan here today.

Malek Razak, however, stressed that the MAF’s assistance would focus on emergency evacuation support and would not involve taking over the MoH’s routine medical operations in their entirety.

Yesterday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said four government agencies, including the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), would assist the MoH in providing temporary mercy flights.

The alternative arrangement, which also involves the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and Fire and Rescue Department, will remain in place pending the outcome of investigations and completion of safety improvements for FDS operations.

The BO-105 helicopter crash near the Long Lellang STOLport runway claimed five lives, including four MoH medical personnel.

“我们已做好准备，满足国防部的要求，协调各项行动，以确保人民的服务不会中断，”他今天在国防部长官邸接受采访时表示，此次采访是为庆祝第93届马来西亚武装部队日而举行的。

然而，马利克·拉扎克强调，马来西亚武装部队的援助将侧重于紧急撤离支持，不会完全接管卫生部的日常医疗行动。

昨天，卫生部长拿督斯里祖基菲里·艾哈迈德表示，包括马来西亚皇家空军在内的四个政府机构将协助卫生部提供临时医疗救援航班。

另一项安排（其中也包括马来西亚皇家警察、马来西亚海事执法机构和消防救援部门）将继续有效，直至调查结果出炉，以及 FDS 运营安全改进措施完成为止。
