Saifuddin Nasution: Second multi-purpose mission ship under construction in Turkiye to be completed by end‑2027

The second Multi-Purpose Mission Ship for Malaysia is under construction in Turkiye and will be delivered to the MMEA by the end of next year.

The Malaysian Home Minister is evaluating an offer for a second offshore patrol vessel from the US Coast Guard, considering its condition and repair costs.

Cooperation with the US Coast Guard has included asset contributions, training, joint operations, and intelligence sharing since the formation of the MMEA.

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 14 — The second Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS), which is currently under construction in Turkiye, is expected to be completed and handed over to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) by the end of next year, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the first MPMS vessel was expected to arrive in March next year, a month before the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA).

“If you recall, two years ago, when President (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan came here, we signed an agreement to purchase one vessel. In less than two years, it is now ready.

“Compared with (if) we were to build it ourselves, there have been various cases where vessels were not completed, funds were exhausted and all sorts of other issues. This has given the Home Ministry confidence that it made the right decision, with a shorter construction period and a reasonable price,” he told the media after attending the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly here today.

Saifuddin Nasution said he would travel to Istanbul, Turkiye, at the end of this month to personally inspect the progress of the vessel’s construction.

He said the vessel’s construction was progressing ahead of schedule, further convincing the ministry that its decision was the right one in terms of the construction period and reasonable price.

The development of the vessel is another important step in efforts to strengthen the capabilities of the MMEA, particularly in addressing an increasingly complex maritime security environment.

In a related development, the ministry will evaluate an offer for a second offshore patrol vessel previously operated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), based on its seaworthiness and repair costs.

Saifuddin Nasution said the evaluation would be based on a report by Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Awang Alik Jeman following an inspection conducted with MMEA experts, engineers and officers.

“They made the offer, but we have to satisfy ourselves (as to whether) it is seaworthy or not. So I tasked the secretary-general to go and inspect it, then submit a report to me,” he said.

He said Malaysia had previously received its first offshore patrol vessel from the USCG, which is now stationed in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

He added that cooperation with the USCG had been established since the formation of the MMEA and covered areas such as asset contributions, training, joint operations and intelligence sharing.

“If its seaworthiness is low and the cost to us is even higher, that would be a burden. We will not agree to it,” he said.

The government previously acquired the KM BENDAHARA offshore patrol vessel through the United States Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, and it was officially handed over to the MMEA on Sept 5, 2025, in Baltimore, United States. — Bernama

布城，9月14日讯——马来西亚内政部长拿督斯里赛夫丁·纳苏蒂安·伊斯梅尔表示，目前正在土耳其建造的第二艘多用途任务船（MPMS）预计将于明年年底完工并交付给马来西亚海事执法机构（MMEA）。

他表示，第一艘MPMS船舶预计将于明年3月抵达，比兰卡威国际海事和航空航天展览会（LIMA）提前一个月。

“如果你还记得，两年前，埃尔多安总统（雷杰普·塔伊普·埃尔多安）来这里时，我们签署了一份购买一艘船的协议。不到两年时间，它现在已经准备就绪了。”

“相比之下，如果我们自己建造，就会出现各种船舶无法完工、资金耗尽以及其他各种问题。这使得内政部确信，他们做出了正确的决定，建造周期更短，价格也更合理。”他今天在出席内政部月度会议后对媒体表示。

赛义夫丁·纳苏蒂安表示，他将于本月底前往土耳其伊斯坦布尔，亲自视察该船的建造进度。

他表示，该船的建造进度比计划提前，这进一步让该部确信，就建造周期和合理价格而言，他们的决定是正确的。

该舰艇的研制是加强海事执法局能力，特别是应对日益复杂的海上安全环境的又一重要举措。

在相关进展中，该部将根据适航性和维修成本，评估美国海岸警卫队（USCG）先前运营的第二艘近海巡逻舰的报价。

赛夫丁·纳苏蒂安表示，评估将以内政部秘书长拿督阿旺·阿里克·杰曼博士在与马来西亚海事执法局专家、工程师和官员进行检查后提交的报告为依据。

“他们提出了报价，但我们必须自行确认它是否适航。所以我责成秘书长去视察，然后向我提交一份报告，”他说。

他表示，马来西亚此前已从美国海岸警卫队接收了第一艘近海巡逻舰，该舰目前驻扎在沙巴州哥打基纳巴卢。

他还补充说，自海事执法机构成立以来，双方就与美国海岸警卫队建立了合作关系，合作领域包括资产贡献、培训、联合行动和情报共享。

他说：“如果它的适航性差，而我们的成本却更高，那将是一个沉重的负担。我们不会同意的。”
