A senior Sulu politician, who has overseen the Philippine province's emergence from decades of turbulence into a new era, believes its ties with Sabah are still strong.

THE most powerful politician in Sulu is Abdusakur “Sakur” Tan, who has held sway in the southern Philippine province near Sabah for decades. However, as local observers like Ameera Tammang note, the 76-year-old Tausug leader might well prefer a different title – perhaps the most loved politician in Sulu rather than a regional strongman.
The political longevity of Sakur Tan – as he’s popularly known – rests on a masterclass in dynastic continuity: He first assumed the governorship in 1996, returning for subsequent stints from 2007 to 2013 and again from 2019 to 2025. Having reached term limits, he now serves as vice governor of Sulu, while his son, Abdusakur “Toto” Tan II, 49, holds the gubernatorial seat.
