Ammonia gas leak in Jordan’s Aqaba industrial area injures 11 people

State news channel Al-Mamlaka says the southern port of Aqaba was evacuated as a precaution following reports of the gas leak.

At least 11 people have been injured in an ammonia gas leak in Jordan’s Aqaba industrial complex, local media reported.

The state news channel, Al-Mamlaka, reported on Monday that the southern port of Aqaba was evacuated as a precaution after the gas leak.

The commissioner for environment and public safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone ‌Authority, Nidal Al-Ouran, said the leak had been contained and that the injuries ranged from minor to moderate.

He said the incident occurred during maintenance work on an old pump or pressure equipment in the southern industrial ⁠area of Aqaba, away from residential ⁠areas. Ammonia gas that had accumulated in the equipment leaked in a small quantity, he said.

Without naming it, Al-Ouran said ⁠the maintenance work was being carried out for a Japanese company.

Workers ⁠would be allowed to ⁠return to their sites after teams from the authority and other relevant agencies carried out another inspection, took the necessary ‌measurements and confirmed there were no remaining risks, he said.

亚喀巴经济特区管理局环境与公共安全专员尼达尔·奥兰表示，泄漏已被控制，伤势从轻微到中度不等。

他说，事故发生在亚喀巴南部工业区，远离居民区，当时正在对一台老旧的泵或压力设备进行维护。设备中积聚的氨气少量泄漏。

Al-Ouran 没有透露公司名称，但表示这项维修工作是为一家日本公司进行的。

他说，在有关部门和其他相关机构的团队进行另一次检查、采取必要措施并确认没有剩余风险后，工人们将被允许返回工地。
