Guan Eng: Umno No Longer Brings Value to Penang Government Amid Cooperation With PN, PAS

DAP's Lim Guan Eng questioned Umno's role in the Penang unity government, noting the party's collaboration with Perikatan Nasional and PAS.

Lim criticised Penang PH chairman Chow Kon Yeow for targeting him instead of responding to Umno's attacks, arguing Umno cannot harm PH's majority if it exits.

Lim urged Penang PH leaders to clarify their stance on Umno's involvement, claiming Umno's presence could damage public perception of the coalition's leadership.

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 16 — DAP’s Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng has questioned the continued presence of Umno in the Penang unity government, saying the party has “no more value” to the administration when it is simultaneously working with Perikatan Nasional (PN) and PAS.

Lim said Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Chow Kon Yeow appeared more focused on criticising him than addressing Umno’s recent attacks on PH, creating what he described as an impression that Chow feared Umno might quit the state government.

He stressed that his earlier remarks were aimed at Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, whom he accused of lacking the courage to challenge Penang PH to remove Umno from the state government — as Zahid had done at the federal level — rather than at Chow.

“Instead of hitting back at Umno for working with the opposition PN, Chow chose to criticise me,” Lim said, adding that Penang PH leaders should not be afraid of offending “an extremist Umno” that he claimed had indulged in divisive rhetoric against non-Muslim minorities and shown little inclusivity toward non-Malays.

Lim also pointed to Umno’s boast that it contributed to the defeat of DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook in the Chenaah seat during the recent Negeri Sembilan election, arguing that DAP leaders had every right to rebut Umno’s allegations against PH and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said Chow may prefer DAP leaders to stay silent, but there was “no gag order” from Loke.

Lim urged Penang PH leaders to take a clear stand on whether Umno should remain in the state administration and convey that position to the coalition’s central leadership.

“Has PH or Chow no firm position after all the attacks by Umno in their recent General Assembly?” he asked.

He claimed Umno was holding on to its positions in the state executive council, the two city councils and state-linked companies because it knew it would have little political impact if it left. Even without Umno’s two assemblymen, Lim said, PH would still command a two‑thirds majority in the Penang legislative assembly.

Lim warned that retaining Umno could damage public perception of Penang PH’s leadership, arguing that the coalition must recognise that “the greatest enemy is the enemy within”.

“PH Penang leaders should wake up to the reality that there is no more value for Umno to remain in the Penang state government when Umno can work actively with PN and PAS from within,” he said.

林冠英还指出，巫统曾吹嘘其对民主行动党秘书长陆兆福在最近的森美兰州选举中在珍那选区落败做出了贡献，并辩称民主行动党领导人完全有权反驳巫统对希望联盟和首相拿督斯里安华的指控。

他表示，周永宏可能更希望民主行动党领袖保持沉默，但陆兆福并没有下达“封口令”。

林冠英敦促槟城希望联盟领导人明确表明巫统是否应该继续留在州政府的立场，并将这一立场传达给联盟的中央领导层。

他问道：“在巫统最近召开的全体大会上，希望联盟和周永康难道没有明确的立场吗？”

他声称，巫统之所以继续占据州行政议会、两个市议会以及与州政府有关联的公司的席位，是因为它知道如果退出，其政治影响力微乎其微。林表示，即使失去巫统的两名州议员，希望联盟仍能在槟城立法议会中占据三分之二的多数席位。

林冠英警告说，保留巫统可能会损害公众对槟城希望联盟领导层的看法，他认为该联盟必须认识到“最大的敌人是内部的敌人”。

他说：“希望联盟槟城领导人应该认清现实，巫统既然可以积极与国盟和伊斯兰党合作，就没有必要继续留在槟城州政府了。”
