Man confesses to 2017 Osaka convenience store robbery spree

OSAKA (TR) – Osaka Prefectural Police have arrested a 35-year-old unemployed man who turned himself in for a string of armed robberies at convenience stores nearly a decade ago, claiming he could no longer live with the guilt, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Sep. 3).

Daisuke Iwata, a resident of Higashiosaka City, has admitted to the allegations, telling investigators he surrendered because he was “driven by remorse,” police announced on Thursday.

According to police, Iwata is accused of storming into three convenience stores in Hirakata City with a knife during the early hours of July 24, 2017. He allegedly threatened store clerks, barking, “Hand over the money,” before making off with a total of approximately 200,000 yen in cash from the registers. No one was injured during the robbery spree.

The cold case saw an unexpected breakthrough in late August of this year when Iwata personally telephoned a local police station, hinting at his involvement in the crimes before formally turning himself in. Under Japanese law, the statute of limitations for robbery is 10 years.

Authorities believe Iwata is also highly likely to be the culprit behind a similar convenience store robbery that took place in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City, in August 2017. Prior to his confession, Osaka and Kyoto police had jointly released security camera footage to the public in a desperate bid for information on the serial robber.

大阪（TR）——据《产经新闻》（9月3日）报道，大阪府警方逮捕了一名35岁的失业男子，该男子自首承认近十年前在便利店犯下多起持械抢劫案，并声称自己再也无法忍受内心的愧疚。

警方周四宣布，东大阪市居民岩田大辅承认了这些指控，并告诉调查人员，他自首是因为“出于悔恨”。

据警方称，岩田涉嫌于2017年7月24日凌晨持刀闯入枚方市三家便利店。他威胁店员，厉声喝道“交出钱来”，随后从收银机抢走约20万日元现金。抢劫过程中无人受伤。

今年8月下旬，这起悬案出现意想不到的突破。岩田主动致电当地警察局，暗示自己参与了犯罪活动，随后正式自首。根据日本法律，抢劫罪的追诉时效为10年。

当局认为，岩田极有可能也是2017年8月发生在京都市伏见区另一起类似便利店抢劫案的罪犯。在他认罪之前，大阪警方和京都警方曾联合向公众公布监控录像，以期获得有关这名连环劫匪的信息。
