Sarawak gets RM1.5b interim special grant as talks continue on annual formula, says Anwar

During the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebrations, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an increase in the interim special grant for Sarawak to RM1.5 billion, matching the recently increased allocation for Sabah.

This initiative underscores the spirit of solidarity within Malaysia and aims to promote equitable development among the states.

Anwar also emphasized the importance of resolving federation issues and the collaboration between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) to enhance national progress, urging for the finalization of their commercial agreement.

KUCHING, Sept 17 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday announced an increase in Sarawak’s interim special grant to RM1.5 billion, up from RM600 million previously, effective this year.

He said the Federal Government will continue negotiations with the Sabah and Sarawak state governments to finalise a sustainable formula for determining the annual Special Grant rate.

“Previously, I announced an increase from RM600 million to RM1.5 billion for Sabah.

“In the spirit of solidarity, friendship and the spirit of Malaysia, tonight I announce RM1.5 billion for Sarawak as well; this is the result of friendship and good negotiations,” he said at the national-level Malaysia Day 2026 celebrations at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here last night.

The Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sarawak, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, was the guest of honour at the celebration.

Also present were Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

Commenting on issues arising within the Malaysian federation, Anwar said there was no problem that could not be resolved and settled.

“I am grateful that through this spirit (of the Malaysian federation), we have been able to implement various projects and programmes for the benefit of the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar said he wanted national oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) to work together as a team to develop the nation.

He explained that to reach a consensus, both parties must respect and recognise rights and laws at both the state and federal levels.

“We have decided that the commercial agreement between Petronas and Petros must be expedited and finalised. There is no reason why this cannot be resolved,” he said. — Bernama
