MCA ready for GE16, focus not on number of seats, says Wee

MCA President Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong expressed the party's readiness for Malaysia's 16th general election, emphasizing their early preparation to avoid last-minute rushes.

Speaking at MCA's annual Johor conference, he highlighted the potential for elections to be called within the next few months.

Wee downplayed the significance of the number of seats contested, focusing instead on winning as the primary goal.

Additionally, he mentioned that any changes in candidate placement would be decided at the Barisan Nasional leadership level.

YONG PENG, Sept 17 — MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong yesterday declared that the party is at a high level of readiness to face the 16th general election (GE16).

The Ayer Hitam MP said MCA has been preparing early to face the election and did not leave things to the last minute, adding that elections could be called at any time because administrations usually last between three years eight months and over four years, based on the last 15 general elections.

“So I feel at this time, there’s only several months left. Maybe four to five months. If we want it expedited, I think usually that will happen, doesn’t reach five years,” he said during a media conference after attending MCA’s annual Johor conference 2026 at Dewan Persatuan Vhe Ann Khor here yesterday.

He downplayed the number of seats MCA aimed to contest in GE16, stating that it was not the main issue.

“To me, the total isn’t important. To win more, that’s even better. But it’s only self gratification if we contest 50 seats and lost all of them, it’s pointless. For me, our target is to win,” he said.

On Kluang Umno’s proposal that MCA give way for Umno to contest the Kluang parliamentary seat for GE16, Wee said it could be discussed at the grassroots level, but the final decision would be at the Barisan Nasional (BN) leadership.

It would also be the same for any change or swapping of seats in other areas, he pointed out.

“What’s more important is that if BN places a candidate, that’s the candidate who represents BN,” he said. — Bernama

马华公会主席拿督斯里魏家祥表示，该党已为马来西亚第16届全国大选做好准备，并强调他们提前做好准备是为了避免最后一刻的慌乱。

他在马华公会柔佛州年度大会上发表讲话时强调，未来几个月内有可能举行选举。

“对我来说，总席位数并不重要。赢得更多席位当然更好。但如果我们竞选50个席位却全部落败，那只是自我满足，毫无意义。对我而言，我们的目标是赢得胜利。”他说道。

对于居銮巫统提出的让位给巫统，使其能够参加第16届全国大选居銮国会议席的提议，魏家祥表示，可以在基层进行讨论，但最终决定权在国民阵线（国阵）领导层。

他还指出，其他区域的任何座位变更或交换也适用同样的规则。
