Four suspects in Malaysian pilot’s Jakarta drug case arrested after fleeing to Thailand, Vietnam

Four of six suspects in a Malaysian co-pilot's drug trafficking case fled to Thailand and Vietnam before their arrest in Malaysia.

The suspects, aged 23 to 50, were detained under the Dangerous Drugs Act after returning from overseas.

The Malaysian co-pilot was arrested in Indonesia with drugs worth RM45 million, allegedly promised RM50,000 for transport.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — Four of six suspects detained by police in connection with a drug trafficking case involving a Malaysian co-pilot arrested in Indonesia were found to have fled to Thailand and Vietnam before they were later detained upon returning to Malaysia.

The four allegedly left the country after learning of the 39-year-old co-pilot’s arrest at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on July 28, according to a report by Harian Metro today.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said all six suspects were detained between August 20 and 28.

“Of the six suspects detained, four had fled overseas, with two going to Thailand and another two to Vietnam,” he said when contacted today.

Hussein said the two suspects who fled to Thailand were arrested after returning to Malaysia by ferry through Kuah, Langkawi, Kedah.

The other two were detained upon their return via Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas, while the remaining two suspects were arrested in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, and Klang, Selangor.

All six suspects, aged between 23 and 50, are being detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 to assist with further investigations.

Under the Act, police can detain suspects for up to 60 days to complete investigations before a further detention order is issued.

Hussein said some findings from the investigation would be shared with the Indonesian National Police (Polri) for further action.

The Malaysian co-pilot was arrested at the International Arrival Terminal of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after arriving from Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines flight MH727.

The arrest was made at about 11.30pm local time after Indonesian customs officers detected suspicious luggage belonging to the co-pilot during an X-ray scan and directed him to an inspection room after he collected the bag.

A subsequent search found 14 packets containing 70,114 ecstasy pills weighing about 25kg in the luggage, as well as four grammes of methamphetamine in his hand luggage, with the drugs estimated to be worth RM45 million.

Indonesian police said the co-pilot had allegedly been promised RM50,000 to transport the drugs to Jakarta, where they were to be collected by another individual from a hotel.

六名嫌疑人年龄介于 23 岁至 50 岁之间，根据 1985 年《危险药物（特别预防措施）法》被拘留，以协助进一步调查。

根据该法案，警方可以拘留嫌疑人最多 60 天以完成调查，之后才会发出进一步的拘留令。

侯赛因表示，调查中的一些发现将与印尼国家警察（Polri）分享，以便采取进一步行动。
