A special fly-past by Gulf Air is planned for the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang International Circuit on October 4, as announced by CAAM.

CAAM has coordinated with control centres to ensure the fly-past causes minimal air traffic disruption, with both rehearsal and race day events scheduled.

After nine years, Malaysia will host the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2-4, following successful diplomacy between Malaysia and Bahrain.

SEPANG, Sept 29 — A special fly-past will be held in conjunction with the Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix (GP) at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) on Sunday (October 4), according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).

CAAM deputy chief executive officer (Air Navigation Services) Zainul Abidin Maslan said the air show, to be managed by Gulf Air, would be held tomorrow for the rehearsal and on race day.

He said CAAM had made technical and service preparations to ensure the performance runs smoothly.

"There will be a low fly-past by Gulf Air just as the race takes off. That one has been coordinated with our team, both control centres and the KLIA control tower.

“It will cause very minimum disruption to air traffic. We are also ready to accommodate that kind of operation during race day,” he said during the CAAM-Media Literacy Programme question-and-answer session here today.

Also present were CAAM chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi and Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president Datuk Yong Soo Heong.

Meanwhile, Zainul Abidin said CAAM is ready to accommodate additional flights transporting F1 team logistics, while also ensuring that the fly-past operation does not disrupt the smooth flow of air traffic on race day.

He added that air traffic volume on that day is expected to remain normal, with only a few additional flights transporting logistics for the teams participating in the race.

Malaysia is set to welcome F1 back to the SIC after nine years, through the hosting of the F1 Bahrain GP from October 2-4.

The SIC previously hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix from 1999 to 2017, before it was dropped from the F1 calendar following rising hosting costs and licensing fees.

The prestigious race's return to Malaysia follows successful diplomacy between His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and King Hamad Isa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain. — Bernama
