Man arrested within 4 hours for allegedly breaking into, stealing from shop in East Coast

A 53-year-old man was arrested on Saturday (Sept 19) for his alleged involvement in a case of housebreaking and theft at a shop in East Coast.

Police said in a news release on Sunday (Sept 20) night that the incident, involving a shop along East Coast Road, happened at about 1.40pm on Saturday.

According to the police, the victim reported that cash amounting to about $100 was stolen from the premises.

Officers from Bedok Police Division and the Police Operations Command Centre identified the man through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras and closed-circuit television (CCTV).

He was arrested within four hours of the report.

The 53-year-old will be charged in court on Monday with the offence of housebreaking and theft.

If found guilty of the said offence, the man could face up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine.

The police reminded members of the public to adopt crime prevention measures such as secure doors, roller shutters, windows and other openings with good quality grilles and closed-shackle padlocks when leaving their premises unattended, even if for a short while.

They should also refrain from keeping large sums of cash and valuables in their premises, and install a burglar alarm, motion sensor lights and/or CCTVs, to cover the access points into their premises.

警方提醒公众，即使只是短暂离开住所，也应采取防范犯罪的措施，例如确保门窗和其他开口的安全，安装高质量的格栅和封闭式挂锁。

他们还应该避免在住所内存放大量现金和贵重物品，并安装防盗警报器、运动传感器灯和/或闭路电视监控系统，以覆盖住所的入口。
