Malaysia’s air quality improves slightly, but Kapit and Serian remain shrouded in haze

As of September 21, Kapit, Sarawak, recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) in Malaysia, rising to 173 by 4pm.

Sarawak was the most affected state with 10 out of 17 national stations displaying unhealthy air quality levels.

While several areas saw a slight drop in pollution, significant improvements were noted in Selangor.

The Department of Environment continues to monitor air quality nationwide and advises the public to limit outdoor activities.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — Air quality in Kapit, Sarawak, deteriorated steadily throughout the day, overtaking other hotspots to become the most polluted location in Malaysia as of 4pm today.

According to Department of Environment (DoE) data, Kapit recorded an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 173, climbing from 166 logged at 8.30am.

Nationwide, a total of 17 monitoring stations remained in the “Unhealthy” bracket (API 101 to 200), down from the 21 affected stations reported earlier in the morning.

IPD Serian in Sarawak, which held the morning’s highest reading at 168, remained unchanged in the afternoon to rank second nationally. Sibu and Sri Aman followed jointly at 163, with Sibu registering a sharp increase from 156 earlier in the day.

Sarawak accounts for majority of affected areas

Sarawak remained by far the hardest-hit state, accounting for 10 of the 17 unhealthy stations nationwide.

Beyond the top four hotspots, elevated pollution levels were recorded in Bintulu (161), Samalaju (158), Kuching (157), Samarahan (155), and Miri (153). Sarikei was the sole station in the state below the 150 mark, registering 106.

In the Klang Valley, Cheras in Kuala Lumpur recorded 156, the highest reading in Peninsular Malaysia, closely followed by Putrajaya at 155. Both stations showed minimal variation from morning levels.

Negeri Sembilan also remained in the unhealthy range, though readings eased slightly, with Nilai at 155 (down from 158) and Seremban at 152 (down from 155).

In Sabah, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu registered 151, a slight improvement from 153 in the morning.

Improvements in Selangor

Selangor recorded the most significant improvement of the day. Johan Setia saw its API drop from 153 to 124, while Shah Alam improved from 152 to 120, though both remained within the unhealthy threshold.

Several stations across the country improved sufficiently to exit the unhealthy category entirely by 4pm, including Kota Kinabalu city in Sabah, Bukit Rambai in Melaka, Tangkak in Johor, alongside ILP Miri and Limbang in Sarawak.

The DoE confirmed that round-the-clock air quality surveillance remains active nationwide, advising the public, especially vulnerable groups, to limit outdoor activities and monitor real-time updates as wind and hotspot patterns shift.

全国范围内，共有 17 个监测站仍处于“不健康”级别（API 101 至 200），低于早上报告的 21 个受影响的监测站。

砂拉越西连警局（IPD Serian）上午的感染率最高，达到168，下午维持不变，位列全国第二。诗巫和斯里阿曼并列第二，感染率均为163，其中诗巫的感染率较早前的156大幅上升。

砂拉越占受灾地区的大部分

砂拉越仍然是受影响最严重的州属，全国 17 个空气质量不达标的监测站中，有 10 个位于砂拉越。

除了污染最严重的四个地区外，民都鲁（161）、三马拉朱（158）、古晋（157）、三马拉汉（155）和美里（153）的污染水平也偏高。沙里基是砂拉越州唯一一个污染水平低于150的监测站，其污染指数为106。

在巴生谷地区，吉隆坡蕉赖的读数为156，是马来西亚半岛最高的读数，紧随其后的是布城，读数为155。这两个站点的读数与早晨的读数相比变化不大。

森美兰州的空气质量指数仍然处于不健康范围内，尽管读数略有下降，汝来为 155（从 158 下降），芙蓉为 152（从 155 下降）。

在沙巴州，哥打基纳巴卢理工学院的感染人数为 151 人，比早上的 153 人略有增加。

雪兰莪州的改善
