LTA trials new material, made using recycled wood, to pave pedestrian paths

Singapore is testing an eco-friendlier material to build pedestrian paths closer to trees.

The pavement mix, known as WoodFlex, is made from recycled wood chips, chipping stone, and cement, shared the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in a video on Saturday (Sept 26).

As it has a flexible and porous surface, air and water can still reach the roots of trees below the footpaths and cycling paths.

A machine is used to pave and compact the mixture in ordinary areas, while workers manually compact the surface of tree root areas.

LTA, together with the National Parks Board, have collaborated with a Japanese supplier to trial WoodFlex since July 2026.

"This trial is part of our ongoing efforts to explore innovative and sustainable solutions for path infrastructure, while enhancing walking and cycling connectivity and preserving existing greenery," added LTA.

The pilot will run for 12 months at two locations: Upper Serangoon Road, near Holy Innocents, High School; and Kaki Bukit Avenue 1, near the junction with Jalan Tenaga.

由于其表面具有柔韧性和多孔性，空气和水仍然可以到达人行道和自行车道下方的树木根部。

在普通区域，使用机器对混合料进行铺设和压实，而树根区域的表面则由工人手工压实。

自 2026 年 7 月起，陆路交通管理局与国家公园管理局合作，与一家日本供应商共同试用 WoodFlex。

“这项试验是我们持续探索创新和可持续的道路基础设施解决方案的一部分，同时增强步行和自行车连接性并保护现有绿地。”陆路交通管理局补充道。

该试点项目将在两个地点进行 12 个月：上实龙岗路，靠近圣婴中学；以及加基武吉 1 道，靠近 Jalan Tenaga 路口。
