4 heavy-vehicle drivers to be charged with alleged speeding offences

Four motorists, aged between 32 and 47, will be charged in court on Tuesday (Sept 29) for alleged speeding offences involving heavy vehicles which must be installed with speed limiters.

The alleged offences were committed between March last year and July 2026, the police said on Monday.

Three cases involved bus drivers who exceeded their vehicle's imposed speed limit of 60kmh, and were allegedly caught speeding at speeds of between 73kmh and 89kmh along various expressways.

A 37-year-old male bus driver was detected driving a bus on CTE towards Seletar Expressway at a speed of 89kmh.

The fourth case involved a 37-year-old male cement truck driver, who was found driving on Sheares Avenue towards East Coast Parkway at a speed of 57kmh.

The imposed speed limit for cement mixers is 40kmh.

If found guilty of speeding, the motorists could be fined up to $1,000, jailed for up to three months, or both.

In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, they may be liable for a fine of up to $2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

Offenders may also face disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.

Heavy vehicles found exceeding their regulated speed limits will be required to undergo inspection to verify that their speed limiters are functioning properly.

The second statutory deadline for speed limiter installation, which applies to lorries registered before Jan 1, 2018, and with a maximum laden weight (MLW) of between 3,501kg and 5,000kg, came into effect on July 1.

Those who own lorries registered on or after Jan 1, 2018, with MLW between 5,001kg and 12,000kg are reminded that the statutory deadline for installation is Jan 1, 2027.

Police reminded motorists that speeding remains one of the main causes of traffic accidents.

"When motorists exceed speed limits, they put themselves at risk and significantly increase the likelihood of severe injuries or death to themselves and other road users in the event of an accident.

"Motorists should adhere to the road and vehicular speed limits for their safety and that of other road users," the police said.

“当驾驶员超速行驶时，他们会将自己置于危险之中，并在发生事故时大大增加自己和其他道路使用者遭受重伤或死亡的可能性。”

警方表示：“为了自身及其他道路使用者的安全，驾驶者应遵守道路和车辆限速规定。”
