Man charged over fake image of crocodile at Pandan Reservoir

SINGAPORE – A man who allegedly generated a fake photograph of a crocodile at Pandan Reservoir was charged in court on Sept 29.

Ye Lin was handed one charge for transmitting a false message, and another for obstructing the course of justice.

Charge sheets stated that the 30-year-old Myanmar national allegedly sent the AI-generated image depicting a presence of a crocodile at Pandan Reservoir to another person on Aug 20.

He is said to have then deleted the digitally edited image and the Gemini AI application history log from his phone on Aug 21.

Ye, who spoke through an interpreter, said he intends to plead guilty and would not be engaging a lawyer.

On Aug 20, national water agency PUB received a report of a crocodile sighting at the reservoir, accompanied by a photo.

As a result, water activities in the reservoir were suspended for two days. PUB and the National Parks Board also launched search-and-capture operations in the area.

The agencies also informed the Singapore Rowing Association and Singapore Canoe Federation, which conduct water activities at the reservoir, to suspend all activities.

PUB filed a police report after verifying the photo was fake on Aug 21. Search operations were ceased, and water activities resumed on Aug 22.

For transmitting a false message, a person can be fined up to $10,000, jailed up to three years, or both.

For the obstruction of justice, an offender can be jailed for up to seven years, fined, or both.

Ye’s case will be heard again in court in November.

8月20日，国家水务局（PUB）收到一份报告，称在水库发现鳄鱼，并附有一张照片。

因此，水库的水上活动暂停了两天。公用事业局和国家公园局也在该地区展开了搜寻和抓捕行动。

相关机构还通知在水库开展水上活动的新加坡赛艇协会和新加坡皮划艇协会暂停所有活动。

8月21日，公用事业局（PUB）在确认照片系伪造后向警方报案。搜救行动随即停止，水上活动于8月22日恢复。

散布虚假信息者，可处以最高 10,000 美元罚款、最高三年监禁，或两者并罚。

妨碍司法公正罪，违法者可被判处最高七年监禁、罚款或两者并罚。

叶某的案件将于11月再次开庭审理。
